Hi people, I decided to re-edit my first page to include links to all of the music as required. This stops people having to search through the thread. I've added all music now in line with suggestions.

Thanks again for the great support!

Existing Music

Here are a couple of pieces I wrote that may work in your games ...

Epic Journey
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/epicjourney5.mp3
An Epic Hero theme, Epic Discovery and then an Epic Battle!

Battle Music
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/battle3.mp3
This is generally more mediaeval than sci-fi but it might work. There's definitely a bit influenced by Duel of the Fates in there.

Tragic Strings
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/lassdemo.mp3
Sad strings for a tragic moment in your game.

Thunder of the Herd
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/thunder.mp3
This is very much Hans Zimmer-style music (like Batman Begins). Again, this could work for some action scenes.

Parking
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/parking.mp3
This piece isn't very Star Wars but it is influenced by John Williams (specifically Jurassic Park) so it might work for softer moments.

Voyage
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/voyage.mp3
This was originally designed for a horror environment however it could certainly work in some of the more dangerous moments for Star Wars.

Overture to the Desert
http://www.genomia.co.uk/boards/overture.mp3
This would definitely work on Tatooine or Geonosis at night. More 'sound design' than orchestral but it is designed for background music.

You can buy my commercially available horror music from http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php? … c=swforums

and contemporary action music from

The Shadow Project

As you all know I'm now writing some new pieces, specifically for SWSE gaming. The new music can be accessed directly from: -

http://www.jamessemple.com/shadowproject.php

Here is a proposed track listing ... including the name of the poster who suggested it and progress.

0. Night Escape
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/escape4.mp3
Inspired by: Me!
Status:
Complete!
Anticipitation and tension bursts into life with exciting adventure music!

1. Betrayal
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/betrayal.mp3
Inspired by: Rob Shanti
Status:
Complete!
A combination of an exciting tense buildup into a tragic climax depicting an Order 66 moment.

2. Machine Arena
http://www.jamessemple.com/music/droidarena.mp3
Inspired by: Monkey Lizard
Status:
Complete!
Music to represent a droid planet and arena. Mostly heavy combat motifs against a backdrop of decay. Lots of metal percussion (like anvils, plates and cymbals) and staccato brass.

3. Duel in the Shadows
Inspired by: Demetri Knighthawk
Status:
Not started
A burst of Coruscant fanfare evolving into darker music as we descend into the lower levels of the city planet. Epic lightsaber combat music probably with choral voices.

4. Shootout
Inspired by: Rob Shanti
Status:
Not started
This would be perfect for a classic firefight scene. Hopefully I'll have something more specific in mind when I come to write this.

5. Exposition
Inspired by: Rob Shanti
Status:
Not started
A couple of minutes of softly inspiring music in the style of the Force theme. Hopefully the perfect piece to narrate over with low, even dynamics.

6. Celebration
Inspired by: Rob Shanti
Status:
Not started
Something exciting and celebratory to play over the end of the game. Probably more in the 'William Walton' style of the end of ANH than any of the other end pieces.

7. Lounge Jazz
Inspired by: Boris the Bulletdodger
Status:
Not started
The obligatory Jizz music. I could get my sax out for this track anyway! This might stretch out to two tracks.

8. Desert Music
Inspired by: Boris the Bulletdodger
Status:
Not started
This is the kind of music often used on Tatooine and works well for either bazaars or for desolate wilderness scenes.

9. Fringe Music
Inspired by: Demetri Knighthawk
Status:
Not started
A piece featuring unusual instrumentation to highlight fringe cultures from the galaxy.

10. BBEG Music
Inspired by: J Shock 75
Status:
Not started
Epic Confrontation music for that final battle. Includes a BBEG theme and busy battle music.

11. Chase Music
Inspired by: J Shock 75 & ShadowPavement
Status:
Not started
Speeder bikes through forests or air speeders across Coruscants or even simply chasing a Bounty Hunter through the Cloud City. Exciting and tense, rhythmic music for all your chase requirements!

12. Negotiations
Inspired by: Raving Dork
Status:
Not started
Dark, sombre music reflecting dealings with a dangerous and corrupting BBEG.

13. Meditations
Inspired by: Demetri Knighthawk
Status:
Not started
A tranquil yet slightly unsettling piece utilising lots of delicate and light percussion with airy strings and choir.

14. Depths
Inspired by: Aiden Mizzrym
Status:
Not started
A sombre and dark piece representing the seedy underside of the big cities.

15. Mystery
http://www.jamessemple.com/ls/bed1.mp3
Inspired by: my players and Attack of the Clones
Status:
Complete!
A somewhat brooding and moody piece depicting a mystery of some form. Perhaps a mysterious location or simply a dangerous time full of doubt.

16. Space Battle
Inspired by: Haplo81
Status:
Not started
A dramatic piece representing a death-defying space battle! Lots of heavy rhythms and heroic brass.

Regards

James

Here's the original post for posterity's sake:

Hi all,

As well as been a fan of SW and roleplaying, I also write music in various styles, often specifically to accompany roleplaying sessions.

Here's a piece I've been working on this week.

http://www.jamessemple.com/music/escape.mp3

It's called Night Escape and it's basically all finding, stealing and escaping in a spaceship.

Lots of John Williams influence on this one!

Enjoy!

Nicely done! Yes, I can definitely see the Williams influence!

Have you compiled any RPing soundtracks that you might be willing to share?

Thanks for the comments people. Much appreciated.

I have done other work for RP soundtracks however they've generally been in the horror genre.

Perhaps I should write some pieces on request.

Here's an idea. Someone come up with an idea for a short scene and I'll write a Star Wars score for it.

As an example, the music above was scored to the following hypothetical scene: -

0:00 - Our hero(es) find an abandoned spaceship
0:26 - Begin prepping the ship for launch
0:50 - Commence launch
1:04 - Actually take flight
1:55 - Come to a landing

So, something similar would be pretty cool.

Thanks again for the comments people!

Love your work. I will use this in my next session.
If you have anything else you want to share I would be very happy indeed.

A scene if you like: suggested themes are decay, heavy industry and the emotions of droids...

1) Long view of a industrial mining colony in the outer rim.
2) In the center stand the run-down droid gladiator arena.
3) The crowd shouts for blood (oil?) as the doomed machines clash on the dirty permacrete.
4) Hidden in the crowd the heroes watch and wait for their moment to strike.

introduction: corruscant at sunrise
Descent: tracking leads down into the 'streets' of corruscant
intense: chase through the sewers
conflict: lightsaber fight in a water flooded chamber
resolution: the villian escapes and the heroes are 'fluhed' away

These are really great ideas people. Now I'll have to write a SW RPG album!

Ok, well the last track took me around 25 hours to create. Perhaps I'll make a start on the first scene of each of your cues to see if I'm in the right ballpark.

I'm supposed to be scoring a film at the moment but there are literally no lightsabers in it whatsoever and I'm really getting bored writing piano music... :D

I have a feeling this will be very popular. Who knows? You may sire a whole new genre: "J. Semple, father of the RPG albums."

Thanks for the encouragement Rob but I'm afraid there are already a fair few albums out that are specifically for RPG background music.

I don't think there's much out in the sci-fi realm but then I think that you're unlikely to run out of appropriate music for a Star Wars game.

Anyway, while I'm feeling generous, why don't you come up with a scene for me to score?

cheers

WOW. What an offer. My players would absolutely EXPLODE if they knew I was arranging with a real musician to score a favorite scene...the execution of Order 66 upon Bothan Jedi Knight Tau Qel Av'lon (a PC), and his "rescue" by the rest of the party of PCs.

Here's the background:

After helping Captain Arvala Chai, heir to the throne of Varonat, fight off a Trade Federation invasion on her homeworld, Bothan Jedi Knight Tau Qel Av'lon asks her to return the favor and spirit him to Utapau, where, he has just been informed, the Jedi Order's spies have located General Grievous. Also traveling with them is a small platoon of clones, sent by the Republic to Varonat as a show of the kind of military backup Varonat would enjoy if it would join the Republic.

Here's the scene itself:

Tau instructed the small platoon of clones to remain with and guard their ship, the Pride of Theed, while he went off alone to search for the Separatist leaders. Shortly after the Pride of Theed crew alighted from their berthed craft, Obseth, the crew's Mon Calamari engineer, spotted the clone troopers hastily leaving their post, armed and determined, without locking the ship down. Suspicious of this uncharacteristic behavior – and annoyed that Tau’s clone troopers would leave her ship unlocked in a public docking bay – Captain Arvala Chai contacted Tau by comlink to inquire whether he had ordered the clones to leave her ship. Tau assured her he had not, and before the com-link transmission ended, the clone troopers emerged from the lift onto Tau’s level and opened fire mercilessly on the Jedi, carrying out Order 66, which had been issued only moments before. The crack shots of these sniper experts found their mark with terrifying accuracy, obliterating the arm Tau had raised in an attempt to deflect the bolts with his yet-to-be ignited lightsaber, and removing one of his eyes in the process of executing him with a head-shot. The inertia of the hail of blaster fire threw Tau’s lifeless body over the edge of the sinkhole cavern and into the abyss below. Seeing this, Arvala hijacked an aircar and deftly caught Tau’s falling corpse. She rushed the body to her Force-sensitive Zabrak crew member Myceena "Mycki" Pimm, who, aided by her Kaiburr Crystal, and desperately calling on the power of her Iridonian Force-using coven, managed a miraculous feat no other Force User could possibly have accomplished . . . she dragged Tau’s lost life-force from the tempestuous gales of the dark eye of the "Maelstrom" (her coven's word for the Force) and back into the world of the living.

Here's the aftermath:

The Dark Side left its mark both on Mycki and on Tau in equal measure – for although the Dark Side is powerful, it never gives without cost (i.e., they both got some Dark Side Points for messing with the natural order of the life cycle). Obseth and Mycki rushed Tau to a nearby medical facility, where Pau’an medics immersed the Bothan Jedi in a tank of healing bacta, where he convalesced until he could sneak off-world and come to terms with the decimation of the Jedi Order, the only life he has ever known. (As it turns out, Tau Qel Av'lon is a favorite character of this player. This player also runs a Rebellion-era game for the rest of us, in which Tau a/k/a "Tal," was an aged, one-eyed, one-armed Jedi-on-the-run GMPC helping the Rebellion, and providing guidance to the PCs. Tal eventually died when the events of the Rebellion-era game finally caught up to the events of A New Hope.)

That's probably way more info than you needed, but I figured I'd give you the details and the context to help you get a handle on the feel of the scene and the characters. I look forward to your composition, maestro! And I can't wait to email the link to my players. They'll fall over. In the unlikely event you feel you need any further background information, the entire campaign has been chronicled in this post.
