Thank you all for the helpful responses. Much appreciated. Re: PyMapper: Er. Yeah. Hmmm. What an ... interesting program. It errors out the moment I open it and won't let me move or delete a tile once I place it. Frustrating that this is the most realistic option for a writer to break into writing for LFR ...

You can use other programs too - most of my experience with making tiles maps has been making them for online play with Maptools. It's a bit odder since many of the tiles need to be resized to fit the grid, but that takes half a second per distinct tile used.
Which I have to say is one of the environments where LFR using dungeon tiles is pure gold. I can setup maps for the game so quickly that way, and it's very convenient and visually works.

Best to ask on the Yahoo group (and send the error message). The developer is pretty responsive.
From my end, I had to enable permissions in Vista so that the program could write to the directories. Just choose the entier directory, right-click, and make sure you enable writing to that folder for the accounts likely to be involved.
Outside of that, make sure all component files are in the logical subdirectories.
Once I did that, everything worked fine. I sometimes had error messages when closing the program but they had no effect on using the program or the files I made.

Alphastream: Yeah, I'm figuring it out. Apparently there was an .ini file problem (from making it load the tilesets on startup).
On a related note: What *are* the tilesets allowed for LFR adventure writing? I see tilesets for a lot of the older tile releases, plus the newer ones, plus two years of free RPGA giveaways, plus some that appear to be from specific adventures.

Any normal tileset is allowed. This means anything other than special things like mini-only or RPGA giveaways. The tilesets are numbered with DT* and DU*.
There are some that really hate seeing adventures pop up with older tilesets (which are only available now for ludicrous prices), but it is completely valid to use them. For one, you just plain have to at times. For another, WotC will be re-releasing some of the older tiles as part of their new Master Tiles sets. Beyond that, using tiles as a DM is not required. Most DMs use good ol' battlemaps or the tiles they happen to own.
The writing guidelines state a limit of no more than 2 of any tileset. You can break that rule for non-essential bits, such as if you need 12 tables (and there may only be two in a set). A DM can use anything, even cut paper, to illustrate the tables. Again, perspectives may differ, but that is allowed.
