I wish players took it upon themselves more often to police their peers. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen, at least in my area. I trust in the campaign staff to fix stuff that WotC cannot, or should not, fix within the core rules.

There is a strong belief, especially among gamers, that if something is within the rules it should be allowed no questions asked. Look at all the clearly abusive stuff that was recently errataed. People took full advantage of these powers/feats and how many of us made it clear to them that we disapproved?

The main reason people don't police their peers is the fact that they themselves could get policed(likely) or they just get tired of not being listened too(Likely as well). I mean, how many times can I personally tell someone that their level 5 bard doing 18 damage on average with vicious mockery is too high?

But you have a point, Rust Monsters were poorly implemented and as such, gamers abused them. I look at my poor log sheet with all the vendored items from mods I didnt really like but played to get, all just to get like 1-2 items i wanted and then see other people with their perfect items for their build, I cry a little. I know who Ferol is speaking of when he mentions someone he knows is abusing rust monsters and I think I know that same person. I didnt believe that person when they talked about it until I saw their item list and they admitted to their "Rust Monster Farm" Myre Mod where they basically just fed unwanted items to a rust monster like a medieval change machine.
I mean, my artificier at 14th level, has about 6-7 slots taken up by high level loot that was vendored for 1/5 price. It makes me a little angry to be honest.

I agree with bgibbons -- social disapproval can be effective, sometimes.

But it terms of enforcement, really the only thing a DM can do is turn the player away. If the DM believes that a player has cheated, he's well within his rights to ask the player for his RPGA record and refuse to let him play if something's fishy. The RPGA downloads page (www.wizards.com/dnd/Event.aspx?x=dnd/4ne...) has an infraction report form to report this.

In jest here,
but shouldn't we come up with some sort of terminology for the rust monster my realms adventures?

Some ideas:
  • A Rusty
  • A Rodney (origin: Rodney Dangerfield, star of the the 1983 Comedy "Easy Money")
  • RUST 1-1 (origin: The rust monster gets its own region)
  • A Paladin-Chaser (origin: Order of the Stick #415 features an image of a paladin being chased by a rust monster in an evil lich's crystal ball)
  • The Halfling Jonster (origin: Cockney Rhyming slang for rust monster. The halfling Jonster also appears in several exisiting LFR mods)
  • Rust Monster Regional Benefit (A PC that constantly uses rust monster MYRE to cash in old items)

MYRE in which he turned a 10th level set of gloves into residuum and used that to craft another 10th level item

Well certainly it isn't legal to do that with a Rust Monster, and so yes I would have problems with that, and if it was a "custom monster" then that is abusing the spirit of the rules and campaign guides, so I have a problem with that as well.

Note: even the Rust Monster Nightmare can only affect Armour, Weapons and Implements.

I don't care if someone has 4 level 6 weapons that they feed to a rust monster for residium, as long as they obtained all those level 6 weapons by legal means. I do care if people are feeding "any 4 magic items of 6th level" to some monster, because that is clearly outside the expectations of the campaign and the core rules.

The part people seem to miss is that you need to have all those items, none of my characters have this wealth of level 6 or whatever items of the types rust monsters target to just feed them all to a rust monster for the fun of it. Further if I spent the gold to buy all those level 6 items I could have clearly just saved it and purchased the item of the appropriate level anyway on reaching it.

There is currently a level 18 weapon available from a normal non-SPEC module.

Abusing rust monsters in this way allows you to turn that weapon into any level 18 item of your choice.

Ok so you pick your level 18 item, for level 14?

Then you can Rust Monster it into any other level 18 item. So?

Where is this mystery gain?

That instead of their level 14 pick being "weapon X that I don't really want" it is "this item I actually want"

They are still not allowed to pick items not allowed in the campaign so where is the problem again?

How?  You can't buy an item above your level, so I don't see how someone could purchase a level 18 item.

Well, despite the obvious being that someone high level than you or an artificier(multiclass or otherwise) can make an item for you that is higher than you. Normally this isnt a problem as most PCs dont have the money to create a lot of high level items. Having nearly 200k because of a rust monters breaks this. Also, even w/o an artificier, being able to buy a lot of items of your level is abusive as it is. Theres a reason why mods that give out bundles like that are few and far in between.  All in all, it is a problem. You could buy your weight in +3 grasping javelins, +3 bloodclaw weapons, and other things with encounter powers you can abuse because they are cheap considering how much money you have. Imagine a fighter bloodclawing every round because he has 5 of them, thats 1 for every round of combat. With quick draw, he can even use it on multiattacks which is silly. Besides, clearly rust monsters shouldnt be exploited like this. Frankly it isnt fair to them or to the rest of us.

Well, its finally happened. I hope everyone is happy. Someone has decided take it to the next level. A con bound to be filled with rust monster myres and mods that give out high level items. And if this kind of thing is ok with the admins, why have the parcel system at all? If players can turn any item they find into enough gold for whatever they want anyway, just do away with the parcel system. I hope this person is ashamed of himself, but probably isnt, since social pressure does not work on gamers ever. I mean is the intent for all P1 characters to obtain 255,000 by playing 3-4 mods? I would atleast like it if an admin came out and admitted it.
