In no way did we tell judges to do that. Nor marshalls nor anybody at HQ. Nor would I ever say such a thing. Now a marshall may have talked to another about what to do, this judge gave his opinion, and hey look this one overheard it and suddenly we have a little miniature 'policy' over in this corner of the room. It's happened before and I stomp them out as fast as I am made aware of them. With 218 judges and volunteers working for me at a show the size of Gencon it's just not possible for me to be 100% informed on everything going on everywhere. I just have to trust my judges and coordinators are doing their jobs.

Sure.  I completely understand how something like that could take place.  My issue is more that, when it did happen, the response from campaign staff was not the expected "Mistakes were made; this never should have happened." but rather something more along the lines of "Eh, the best case scenario is to follow the rules, but better to break the rules than give someone what they think is an unfair result, and besides, other campaigns did this too."

That's a quite different philosophy than "The rules are more important than whether your group is having fun" and I have a difficult time rationalizing the two.

I'd go with the former, actually. That kind of behavior does impress me.

Anyone (myself included) who's justifying their response to the situation based on what they assume people will think ought to be careful about it. As human beings, we are remarkably good at pretending other people agree with us.

Part of me sees it as commendable; the rest of me simply sees it as foolish. So I guess I have both reactions myself. They're not mutually exclusive.

However, I'm not assuming--I'm quoting (imprecisely) part of the conversation I heard at a table after the errata came out and one player was deciding whether or not to play an avenger and if so, what to do. Perhaps I am assuming that my local community is typical in its adherence to the rules (or lackthereof). But in the LG days when there was actually a reason for gaming travel, it seemed like my current area was if anything slightly more lawful-minded than other RPGA communities. I doubt that has changed a lot.

Huh, that I couldn't speak to, being a newcomer. (This is where you can say "ah, that's why you're not jaded.")

If the RPGA rules as posted are not valid, then what exactly are the RPGA rules?

The rules that are important to answer all of the questions you posit, are in the CCG.

The LFR rules specifically allow all of the behavior you seem to question.

And I've pointed this out before, I believe the last time someone asked this. Was it you?

I wonder how many people strongly affected by errata aren't able to play another character for a bit - like I've got one character who just leveled into paragon who I'm not playing cause I want to give them another month (or maybe two, we'll see) of updates before I do, since I already slightly dodged a bullet by failing to level him up before Dec 15.

Instead I'm just playing other characters. And DMing more. Eh.

The implication of cheating and bad sportsmanship was made.

Neither are true, and the assertion was repugnant.

Actually what you are boasting about doing does fall under the RPGA guidelines for cheating, no matter how repugnant or untrue you may think such assertions are.  Trying to hide behind righteous indignation, stating that the rules don't say you can't do this or any other contrivances such as poor customer service, etc. doesn't change this fact.

Personally, I don't think anyone here cares enough to pay it much attention.  We all know some people have been hit hard by the updates and nothing is forthcoming soon it seems.  I doubt anyone is going to bat an eye.  All Wolfstar was trying to say is that folks should watch themselves in regards to publicly declaring such things because if someone had a mind to they could report you for cheating.

Sorry WOTC, you lost me with Essentials.  So where I used to buy every book that came out, now I will be very choosy about what I buy.  Can we just get back to real 4e?

Check out the 4e Conversion Wiki.

2. A barbarian hits people with his axe.  A warlord hits people with his barbarian.
3. Boo-freakin'-hoo, ya light-slingin' finger-wigglers. -- MrCelcius in response to the Cleric's Healer's Lore nerf

I can see that after his clarification and I suppose I probably owe him an apology. I had initially read it as, "and we might just want to track down a few people from this thread and make examples of them" which, upon reflection, I do not think was what he intended to communicate. (Though you never know, someone might decide to do that after all, so if you did make changes, for goodness sake, don't explicitly admit it on WotC's own RPGA boards. Not only does it expose you to unnecessary risk, but it also encourages other people to treat the rules lightly which no-one who cares about the game should want).

After having a discussion with our update crew here this afternoon, I've released the following blog post on the LFR groups site regarding an interim update policy for LFR.

Please, please, please let everyone take a deep breath.

We have some interim rules.

Everyone is different. Some will love them. Some will hate them. Let's relax, take some time to think on it, then post in a mature fashion about what we like and don't like in a way that is respectful to all the people (admins, players, etc.) involved.
