So I was recently told that the Drow House Insignia's from the P2 adventure are LFR legal, but the other H and P module items are not - is there a reason for this?

Thanks!

The reason is ``someone lied to you''.  `P2 Demon Queen Enclave' is not a legal source for items.

Of course, the items could be put directly into an adventure (which they were), and then you get take them from the adventure, but you can't just buy them, or upgrade them, or do anything but `take them in that adventure' or `sell them for 20%', at the moment.

I hope that helps.

So a previously illegal item was put in an adventure?

Is that common?

Is there a particular reason why it was considered 'acceptable' but the other items were not?

Seems a bit odd to say the least.

Module authors are not bound by the same content restrictions as players are.

But it is funny when the Character Builder says your character is no longer LFR legal because you ran a published LFR adventure and took a bundle from it.

Not to decry the efforts of Mike Donais, but the Character Builder's idea of `LFR Legal' is waaay more of a guideline than a rule.

To the best of my knowledge (about to get on a plane; can't easily check my records) LFR has approved 3 `nonstandard' items, all simply being things that are outside of the materials any PC could buy in a store.  Compared to previous Living Campaigns, this is essentially zero.  Why can they do it?  Because the items that authors want to include are reviewed by (at least) a regional admin and at least two parts of Wizards of the Coast R&D (a `story' pass and a `crunch' pass).

OK, I still haven't seen an answer to this question: what backgrounds are LFR legal?  The character builder (with the LFR campaign file selected) shows the Scales of War backgrounds as being legal choices.  Is this the case?

what backgrounds are LFR legal?

You'll want to look at the RPGA Character Creation Guidelines (current version v.1.95) to determine what is and isn't a legal LFR character (rather than, for example, just trying things in the Character Builder until it says that you're houseruled).  In this case, the CCG says this:
  • Select a character background. You may choose a character background benefit from any player resource. You may gain a background benefit from your character region (if the region has a benefit listed in the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide) or one based on your race, occupation or other background (as listed in Player's Handbook 2 and other sources). However, you only gain the mechanical benefit of one background, not from both your region and another source.

This is the second bullet point under `Special Character Creation Rules', which tells you how the LFR rules differ from the generic RPGA rules.  It's on page 7 of the CCG, left column, the first bullet point on the page.  It'll probably be in red text because it was changed in the most recent version.

The `from any player resource' part says, basically, ``look at the player resources list for general RPGA characters'' -- there's a section titled exactly that.  Right now, that means that published books, Dungeon, and Dragon articles are all available for backgrounds, *except* that the spellscarred backgrounds from the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide and the dragonmarked backgrounds from the Eberron Player's Guide are legal player background choices in LFR.  The `multiple choices' bit means that you can choose, for example, to be a Nomadic Desert Soldier from Thay, and choose the background benefit of Born Under a Bad Sign.  In other words, choose whatever backgrounds you think fir your character, but you only get the mechanical benefit from *one* background.  This is, conveniently enough, how the Character Builder works -- you can choose lots of backgrounds, but you also choose a single `Regional Benefit' (by default, it chooses the benefit of your first choice).

I hope this helps.

Point of information -- Dungeon Magazine is not a legal player resource. However, the article with the Scales of War backgrounds in it is in Dungeon #366, so Scales of War backgrounds are legal nonetheless.
