Well, in that case...
I find these days, when I play with the 'old guard' game group, I generally roll everything in front of them. I sometimes do 'mock rolls' and make pointless notes, so they don't get too used to the transparent DMing. For us, it instills a sense of trust between the DM and the players that, the DM cannot pull punches. The group I play with regularly would rather TPK honestly, than have a DM fudge for them. Its ego, but we are predominantly middle aged men. Go figure.
For my Niece and Nephews however, I fudge behind the screen almost every fight. For them, its not about the challenge, its about the interaction. So Fudging is necessary to meet the expectations of the game.
