a) I thought that while the D&D forums have an off-topic forum, this one didn't before the changes either; and

b) This forum, to me, only seems dead because we don't have as many people around complaining about the Magic: 2012 rules changes, or asking Wizards to reprint the Power 9; and

c) Serious discussion about decklists and the metagame was always stronger in more advanced off-site forums -  there used to be the famous Magic Dojo, which no longer exists.
Coming up with weird ideas to make everyone happy since 2008!

I have now started a blog as an appropriate place to put my crazy ideas.

In my defense. I was only talking about the thread itself, not the meme it spawned.

Thanks! I'm glad I finally managed to get the expression down--I tried a number of times before I got anything close to the right shuddering effect.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

Rec Room dying is tragic. Very, very tragic.

The whole General Gaming and WOTC Communtiy section of the forums really needs to be reworked. It hardly has any purpose in its current incarnation.

Did these forums ever have a huge deck construction and play format following? I know other sites have almost always been ahead of our curve. I never used them much, but I always felt that I knew a large number of the regulars there.

YMTC has taken a hit, but not as big as other places and it's rebuilt well since that day that will live in infamy. If another forum had a better YMTC forum, I'd consider leaving, even with all the history.

Losing WizO interaction sucked. New moderation is less than effective. We fought through much of the posting problems that made me reluctact to post, but it's still not as clean as I'd like.

There was always gonna be change. That's just how the beast lives. The tech team just either doesn't have the proper time, skills, or tools to make these forums work to their fullest. Many people agree that MTGO has similar problems. I'm not savant enough to make many recommendations, but I know I've seen better from here and elsewhere.

It's a tough job, I'm sure. I'd still rather complain than remain silent.

Way, way, way, WAY back in the day, I can assert that it did.  This was back in the early days of my joining, circa 2002.  I ran a rather prolific Casual deck rater, and I had to shut the stupid thing down after I was in the 900+ post count due to backlog.  And I wasn't even the best known (or best), just very dedicated to the cause.  In the Casual deck help forum alone, I can vaguely remember at least 5-6 other conistent raters and dedicated help threads run by different people, and threads would show up all the time.  I remember the standard forum was a tad less busy, though still had plenty of traffic and far more than you see today.   Extended was... well, let's just say not many people cared about extended at that point either.  Vintage and Legacy were busy enough.

Also, what is this whole "Gleemax" thing people are talking about, and the day of infamy?  I took a 7 year hiatus, and this must have occurred during that time.

I'm a little late here, but I wanted to respond to a few things.

There are no quality standards here. When you can set your calendar to the endless posts of "I'm coming back to Magic! What is it like now?", "I'm starting Magic! What is it like now?", and "I just posted this ultra low budget casual deck! What do you like about it now?" things are in bad shape. Discussions like these in large and frequent numbers drive away people who have been around a while.

It is actualy that strict moderation that keeps things from going down the tubes. It makes sure that discussions have quality. It makes sure that content can keep getting generated and not get drowned in a sea of the banal and mundane.

I agree with you on the moderation issue, which is why I don't apologize for being aggressive with thread moves and locks. We created a new player forum several months ago to contain some of these discussions, and I think it has helped some. New and returning player threads will continue to be moved there. I can't make people post in the right place, but I *can* make sure their threads don't clog up the place long.

I am definitely open to creating a new off-topic area on the Magic boards. I will be proposing a second round of forum reorganziation in the coming days, and a new off-topic forum for the Magic area is on that list. Keep an eye on the Magic Forums Business Forum for a thread.

There's a lot of things I can't do anything about (the software, the moderation scheme separating VCLs and ORCs, WotC caring), but I'll do what I can to improve things around here.

I'm trying to make my official VCL posts in purple

You posted saying my thread was moved/locked but nothing happened.      Spoiler: Show
Unfortunately, VCLs do not currently have the tools necessary to take moderation actions directly. VCLs submit their actions to ORCs, who then actually perform the action. This processing can take between a few minutes and several hours, depending on how busy/attentive the ORCs are.

If you see something that needs VCL attention, please use this thread (MTGO) or this thread (paper) to make a request and a VCL will look at it as soon as possible.  CoC violations should be reported to Customer Service using the "report post" button. Please do not disrupt the thread by making requests of either kind in-thread.

An off topic forum would be aawesome. Good luck in getting it done Bubba.

Now, if we could find a way to keep the casual deck forum from getting so cluttered with crap...

I think this would be a good thing. I think we would be able to keep posters more if there was a fun off topic forum.

As zammm pointed out, what we really need is very visible links in each of the areas that redirect to the rec-room. There used to be a link right under Magic General that got you there. I miss the Star Wars and D&D guys I used to chat with, and that's what the rec-room did best!
