They already have the phantom events for the more casual players...
This made me do a double take. Why? Because *I* think the phantom events don't target casual audiences at all. If you don't 'keep the cards' it's ALL about the quality of your drafting, which I would expect to appeal more to non-casual players.
The casual players remark above probably refered to the cheap price of entry. You get to play two hours of limited, and even if you lose twice, it's only four tickets, and you gained some experience. Non-casual players mostly care about EV and such; and yes, if you're good enough to win two queues out of three, six boosters for twelve tix is a good deal.
So these phantoms should be appealing to most everyone. After all, you can always take your winnings and crack them in the draft queues.

I think they would fire if they eliminate the tix cost and switched to 7-4-1. It's only a small increase in the EV (-16 tix in, -2 boosters out = net +2 boosters), but they would feel much better. The winner would actually get ahead, and the no tix entry would be a big incentive. They already have the phantom events for the more casual players, there's no need to overlap audiences. This queue should appeal at least somewhat to the competitive player.
As a point of fact, they used to have nix-tix 6-booster sealed with a 9-4-1 payout, and those only fired for about a week (and occasionally for a few days after a release ended), then died.

Well they demonstrably don't, no matter what logic you apply to them - they aren't firing like 4 pack did. Part of your mistake is that nobody is good enough to win 2/3 events, that's an absurd ratio. Not even lsv wins 2/3 drafts, and it is presumably easier to even out randomness that could cause a loss in drafts than it is in sealed where your entire pool is up to chance.
Also, people don't want to play some theoretically better phantom pack EV in order to open packs in order to play a bad EV pack opening event. They want to come to one place for both things, and that's reasonable.

Well, I played three so far, and got a booster out of each one. So I thought that somebody who actually knows how to play limited might do really well in these queues. But it may be that winning the event takes a good pool, not just a good player.
And good players play in these. I watch my rating between matches, and two out of three players have appreciably higher rating than me. And the third one is usually quite unexperienced.

I've just realised that the release and pre-release 6 pack sealeds are actually cheaper to enter than the regular queues. While the release events have always been good value. The fact that the pre-release seems decent compared to the regular queues really shows how poor the value is in them.
I've bought the cards and made a deck Now how do I win at this?

I haven't played since christmas cube, checked in today, surprised to see a new cube already. Saw I am almost running out of tix, might join a phantom sealed to try it out. After reading this thread and seeing pack prices will devaluate more and more I don't feel like buying new tix. I think I keep it at paper magic for most of this year, maybe showing up for Realease Week from time to time.
I did enjoy cube format in 2012, but the 'Cool! New!' factor has passed now and the prizes don't justify the cost.

So, buried somewhere in this thread is a link to a Twitter post from Worth where he says that 4-pack sealed isn't even a real thing. Seems real enough for Pax East. www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.a...here are also huge swaths of tournaments going the whole time. Prizes include things like " Avacyn Restored Foil Set" and " Gatecrash Uncut Foil Card Sheet." And those are both for the same tournament, a four-booster Sealed deck on Sunday. There's a complete schedule in PDF form here. And if you just want to hang out and play Magic, there's an Intro Pack league to make sure that there are other people with the same idea as you! PAX East is March 22-24, 2013, in Boston, MA. Frankly, it sounds like a lot of fun!

So how has cancelling 4-pack sealed effected the MTGO economy in 3 months time? Unfortunately our doom scenarios about plummeting pack prices have come true and constructed queues now have abysmal value.
As I'm typing this, GTC is right around the $3 mark and RTR has only slightly rebounded to about $3.3. There's an overabundance of supply of current-set boosters, basically because everything pays out in these packs and nothing (except drafts) uses them. Exactly as we suspected.
I'm curious if Wizards has any changes in mind. Cause atm I can't justify playing a phantom sealed or a constructed event because of the terrible value due to low pack prices. For god's sake, just let us use our boosters to enter events!

Is someone going to monitor pack prices to see if they are effected by the return of 4-pack sealed?
