HI everyone,

I've been offline for 2 months because of a move and just got my internet today. I went to update the latest version of MTGO and it downloads all the files fine but then MTGO gives me the following error accross the kicker screen in yellow text:

file copy start - object reference not set to an instance of an object

I ran a repair, but still received the error.

So I installed .net4 and .net4 web client and nothing fixed it.

Then I uninstalled MTGO and downloaded the helper and I started to get errors with the graphics files for the cards during installation. I tried to click ignore past them hoping to just get to the kicker screen so I could run repair, but there's literally hundreds and I had to abort.

Luckily, I had a older version of the helper, and used that to install and download the updates. But even after I downloaded the updates, I still received the error.

But here's the real weird thing. The first update I downloaded, it contained 5500 files (which is expected), but when I received the error I deleted the filelist.txt and the newfilelist.txt did repair again, and got 500 files, but still got the error. Out of frustration, I hit repair again and got 1600 files.

After that, I ran the renamer.exe and the kicker.exe and that didn't help either

I'm able to log onto the V4 beta just fine, so I'm dumfounded as to what's going on.

I'm running windows XP on a bootcamped mac. I've never encountered this problem before and would appreciate any help.

**UPDATE**

So I called Customer Service to see if they could help me out and see if I was doing something stupid. We ran through the list of items and I had done most of what the rep recommended. He also said I should update .net2 as well as .net4. But he told me unfortunately there isn't any support of systems that are bootcamped, as the client is intended to be ran on a native PC system (windows).

So I went ahead and updated .net2 based on the link the rep provided, and still no go.

If your having a similar issue, please comment below with when you began to experience the error, and what your system specs are please. From the comments already described below, it's starting to sound like something in the last wendesday update that isn't bootcamp friendly imo.

Peppill, Razorwynd,

are you two running bootcamped macs as well, or do you have PC's?

This is starting to sound like something in the update from Wednesday......

I have not been able to run MTGO since the update. Was receiving the same error message (file copy start). Am also running Bootcamp on a MacBook, Windows XP.

I attempted to uninstall/reinstall and the installer crashes about 80% of the way through with this dialog box:

"File Error

The following error occurred on the file 'C:\Program Files\Wizards of the Coast\Magic Online\Graphics\Cards\Pics\91846_typ_reg_sty_010.jpg.'

The directory or file could not be created.
(0x52)"

I get an Abort/Retry/Ignore there; Retry pops the dialog box again, Abort cancels installation, and Ignore causes it to proceed to the next picture file which also pops the dialog box.

Have tried re-downloading the installer from Wizards.com, and it crashes at the same point.

Wasted about 3.5 hours on this tonight and am not very pleased! CustServ, get your thinking cap on.

From my layperson's perspective there appears to be some issue with some of the picture files which is causing the Kicker to choke on startup, and it's probably the same issue that's preventing the installer from completing, so maybe start there.

I got the update to work. During the update before the copy failure i copied the pic files from the tmp folder into a new folder on my desktop. I named that folder pics2 and copied it into the MTGO graphics folder after I got the copy start failure. After that i copied all the pic files from the original pics folder (older editions) into the new pics2 folder.  After that i emptied the original pics folder. Next step was to copy all the files from the pics2 into the pics folder again. Not sure why but this did the trick. When the update started only some non pic files were left to download and the copy process worked without the error. Hope this helps.

Yeah I am running windows xp via bootcamp on a 2008 MacBook.

@ Sayyadina_: Thanks for the solution. If it is at all possible could you be a littme more detailed about your suggested fix?

I am trying replicated your solution but I am having trouble...

For example, How far though the update did you copy the files? I have 276 files that are being updated, when should I copy?

Thanks!

EDIT: after trying again a second time things work! I guess the above description is sufficiently clear!

Thanks!
