Hi there,

Firstly, I've not got this game yet, and have never played in RL, have only played Duels of the Planeswalkers. So I don't know a lot about the game itself, and have almost no idea of this one apart from the fact that the deck I just created seemed to fit this game.

So firstly : how come this place is so quiet? I thought the forums for decks would be a lot busier than they are?

Secondly, just wondering what anyone thinks of this blue deck as a first attempt at making one:

Island x26

Lord of the Unreal x4
Krovikan Mist x4
Phantom Warrior x3
Phantasmal Image x1
Phyrexian Metamorph x2

Infinite Reflection x3
Vapor Snag x4
Ponder x3
Mind Control x2
Cancel x2
Psychic Barrier x1
Counterspell x4
Time Warp x1

Finally : if I get the game, how would I go about aquiring that deck? And would it cost a lot?

Thanks if anyone can help anyway.

Hi wellcome.
Not sure why its so quiet. I'm guessing its due to it being release week in the paper mtg world. But generally the deck help forums are busier on the paper side of these boards and the formats are the same so head over there for better deck help.
But my rough opinion on your deck. Get rid of the counterspell s. due to their age they will force the deck to be played in the classic format and frankly the rest of the deck is not up to that level Also ponder is banned in most formats other than classic so that will need to go too.
Or you could keep the ponder and make it a standard legal deck but that would mean losing the krovikan mist , time warp , phantom warrior , and also counterspell .
Either way I'd also cut 2 lands and add a few more illusions.
As for cost only the phantasmal image woild be slightly expensive. To buy the deck the easiest way is to buy a load of tickets from the store and then trade the tickets with one of the many traders in the clasifieds.

Hope that helps
I've bought the cards and made a deck
Now how do I win at this?

Hi there, and yep, thanks!

Also I forgot to say that yeah, it was aimed for classic, as the deck is focused on countering and stealing creatures whilst I get my own few doing the damage they can in the meantime. One thing I forgot though was that classic is basically anything isn't it? So there's going to be tons of cards that I need to research first. I do want to eventually play classic though, I'm not really into the idea of not being allowed cards, so will just have to get researching....   But thanks for reminding me what cards I need to dump for other formats, because I can get on with doing that a lot more quickly.

Thanks for the others answers too, will probably get this game in a couple of weeks now and try it out. (because not being able to make decks in duels of the planeswalkers will eventually drive me mad, even though it's great for learning how the game works.)

I wouldn't go and try to reseach all the cards available in classic before you start playing, that would take such a long amount of time....you'd likely never get to the actual playing part.  I think it would be better to jump right in and learn as you go.  You'll quickly learn the more popular cards that are played in many decks.

Also, about the counterspells.  I haven't check in many years, but I know a while ago they cost in the range of $2 each, even though they are a common.  Counterspell is the chepest and most versitile counterspell, it was also released only in 7th edition (on MTGO), so that makes it harder to get ahold of.  Actually, now that I think about it, they might have included counterspell in some of the ME sets, which would likely bring the price down, so I could be totally wrong about the price....

Infinite reflection might be too expensive, but it could certainly win you the game the turn you play it, so that's a plus.  More phantasmal image would obviously be good.  The more times you can copy Lord of the Unreal, the better.

Hi...welcome.

You mentioned that you have played DotP...the 2012 version?  If so, you are already familiar with the "Realm of Illusion" deck.  If not, here's the link...

www.wizards.com/magic/digital/duelsofthe...

Most of the cards you have listed are under 10 cents each.  There are a few more expensive ones however...

Phantasmal Image ($6.25), Phyrexian Metamorph ($9.50), Time Warp ($2.60).  You can "google" MTGO card prices to find websites that will provide card prices.  I can't list the websites here, because it's considered advertising.

Have fun and good luck.

P.S.  If you have more questions or want to play some games, my in-game name is Lafave.

There are tons of counterspell s online.  It has been in 7th Edition, Tempest, Mercadian Masques, Masters Edition 2, and Masters Edition 4.

So yeah your deck should be fairly cheap.

Most deck tech stuff happens on the regular Magic paper forums.

Classic is every card that has been released on Magic Online, but it has a restricted list of some cards that are limted to one per deck.  That list is here:
www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx...

The list of all the different formats is here:
www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx...

Illusions can be a pretty aggro tribe, and have seen some wins in competitive Classic.  If you are a new player, you are not ready for the tournament world yet, but I'm sure you could have a lot of fun with an Illusions deck in the Casual room.  Here's the competitive version of the deck anyway just for some card ideas, although this version would cost upwards of $700.
www.classicquarter.com/decks/deckview.as...

The best way to try out MTGO and different decks is to just download the program and start playing.  You'll find it a bit different than DotP, but it's better overall.  We can post all day long about the deck, but 10 or 20 games will tell you way more about how it plays and which cards need to be swapped out.

You'd get the cards online by buying the specific singles you want from bots in the game or from websites that sell MTGO singles.

Hi again, and thanks for the help! I'll not reply to every bit of advice listed, but I've read all of them and they've been helpful, so thanks loads. And will check for you if/when I get the game Lafave, thanks!

As for the illusion deck and the concentrating on counterspells, well cavern of souls has kind of thrown a big spanner in the works regarding that I suppose. Unless there's a set of spells that can target that type of land and destroy it, which there probably is somewhere so will hopefully find them if I get back around to this.

Am already kind of changing my mind about what type of deck I want to use though I think. That's basically because I've started using the Kiora Atua – Ancient Depths deck in duels, and have discovered the Eldrazi! Ran a search for them and those cards are insane, so I'd want to add some of them into a classic deck. There's also a huge load of artifacts that really interest me, so my ideal deck now would probably be blue/green/artifacts.

I originally had the idea of going blue/green a while back because I like Elves, and after seeing how quickly you can get mana sorted with that Kiora deck + the way it seems to mix well, I think I'll try that instead.

I also started checking back through the allowed decks for standard, and have found many more cards from blue that I like, so even though I've not played anything but Duels, I feel like I'm learning pretty quickly and of course, simply playing like has already been suggested is the best way to expand knowledge of the game, especially when you start facing all the cards more experienced players are using.

And yeah, almost every game I've played so far on Duels has been only using Jace's illusion deck, and have got pretty good at using it so I know those cards well now. Next I'm going to play Kiora's deck, then any other with blue and green, then will finally play Tezzerets deck for the artifact usage. By that point I'll probably have the spare cash to get MTGO and start playing, and with my current habit of researching cards almost daily on magiccards.info and gatherer I should be pretty much there.

Thanks again for the help anyway!

Definitely going Blue/Green/Artifact if I can. Blue to control, Green for Elves and mana boosting, Artifacts for Steel Overseer's and Wurmcoils, then some Eldrazi to complete it!

If you want to destroy lands in classic, the go-to answer is Wasteland .  The only problem is that they cost, like, $45 each.  So.....yeah, they are too super awesome and there isn't many of them floating around, which sucks.

Wow, a bit out of my price range for now I think, thanks though!

Have got the game now anyway, (Am just balancer without the 888 on the end ingame.) and also got a cheap blue/green artifact deck that after a lot of messing around with has finally started winning some games against various strategies. Am a bit surprised with it so will try improving it and see how well it goes. It's only constructed standard as there's no way I can afford a decent classic deck, but it's fine for the time being :

Mana 23 :

Manalith x1
Island x 10
Forest x12

Creatures x 21 :

Darksteel Sentinel x1
Adaptive Automaton x2
Darksteel Myr x2
Thran Golem x1
Ezuri, Renegade Leader x1
Elvish Archdruid x1
Ezuri's Brigade x2
Ezuri's Archers x1
Llanowar Elves x1
Gladecover Scout x2
Greater Basilisk x1
Garruk's Companion x1
Sacred Wolf x1
Lurking Crocodile x1
Aven Fleetwing x3

Other Artifacts x2 :

Swiftfoot Boots x1
Darksteel Plate x1

Spells x14 :

Mind Control x2
Cancel x3
Divination x1
Turn to Frog x1
Overrun x1
Bountiful Harvest x1
Trollhide x1
Naturalize x1
Rampant Growth x1
Titanic Growth x1
Fog x1

(edit : I really need to add at least 2 of Negate.)

Pretty chaotic and I'd prefer to have 4 Adaptive Automatons + more of some other stuff, but because there's so many different things instead it works ok in quite a few situations. The main focus (probably until I get more cards.) is getting metalcraft on Ezuri's Brigade, and also having the bonuses from Automatons as Elves, Ezuri himself and the Archdruid.

edit : Have been doing some more research (yeah I'm obsessed..) and have found some cards that could be added to make the deck better.

Grimoire of the Dead
Strangleroot Geist
Wurmcoil Engine
Jace Beleren
Phyrexian Metamorph
Infinite Reflection
Invisible Stalker
Thopter Assembly
Dungrove Elder
Primordial Hydra
Vorapede
Thrun, the Last Troll
Ghostform
Latch Seeker

Will be fairly expensive and obviously can't add all of them, but will start adding some when I get spare cash!
