What are people's thoughts on forming an Heirloom League for the Commander format?

Based on the official ban list, here are so far the only 5 cards that would be banned:

Limited resources

Biorhythmn

Coalition victory

Protean hulk

Sway of the stars

All Heirloom price Legends are fair game* (the only banned generals are Braids Cabal Minion, Erayo, and Rofellos.)

The normal Heirloom ban list probably applies as well, however I'm sure this can be edited based on the differences in the format:

*Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir: Can't be used as either the General or be used in the maindeck

Argentum Armor: Can be fetched with Godo, bandit Warlord, as well as some other artifact tutors. Might be removed, but gonna probably keep because it can be so easily attached and abused with Godo. *Note* Godo is currently not Heirloom legal, but next rotation I'm fairly certain he will be again.

Hypergenesis: This can probably be removed, since it's deadliest in a dedicated Hypergenesis deck with cascade. It essentially loses all of its effectiveness in Commander.

Zuran Orb: Can probably be removed. Commander is infamous for having a higher starting life total, as well as having more abuseable ways of gaining life.

I'm going to look through the Heirloom list and see if I can find other cards that are Heirloom legal and yet still too abuseable.

If this were to be formed, do we want it to be casual or competitive/cutthroat? Do we want scheduled best two out of three tournaments in 1v1 or freeform multiplayer where any Heirloom player with a Commander deck can challenge another for a solo or multi game? We can create some casual guidelines (for example, no mass land destruction) if need be.

Post your thoughts on if this is a good idea, and any suggestions.

I like the idea.  Never really had a chance to play the Commander format and I reckon this would be quite cool.  I think for starters it would be good to make a list of the potential Commanders in the Heirloom format, just for ease of reference for anyone who wanted to play.

Not sure how you would want to work the league but I think the kind of cards you'd want to play would vary widely on whether it was 1 vs 1 Commander or multiplayer.  Either way I reckon it could be a fun format provided you could get some interest going.

In terms of card banning, it might come down to individual taste.  Mass land destruction such as Wildfire and Destructive Force might not be considered in the spirit of Commander.

Here's the full list of Commanders are available in Heirloom (based on current MTGO prices; had to check using that. Some, Like Godo, aren't currently legal in the current rotation but will likely be at some point.)

Note: Some of these Generals are 100% useless in EDH. For example: Mishra, all of the Myojins, Phage the Untouchable, etc.

I am all for it, would love to play a multiplayer format again

I don't know if Heirlooms website supports this. If not I would be glad to host this event at www.Gatherling.com for you. You would just need to designate someone to host. Although right now Gatherling.com does not support Multi-player formats I would be happy to develop it if there is interest. So in the beginning you would have to do Commander Dules only.

I've been wanting to try out a Commander event for a while, but most of the ones I go to are way too competitive. I would love to play Heirloom Commander.

(Bragging time: I floated this idea to Naproxen last year and he turned me down. :P)

After some talks with Chrismh77, we decided that to start out, the banned list will only be the 5 from the normal ban list, and Teferi will be banned as a general, but useable in the main deck. This decision came from figuring that any card that's legal enough for normal Commander is good enough for us- this was mostly in considering the mass land destruction spells, such as Impending Disaster, Thoughts of Ruin, Jokulhaups, etc. I'm keeping a mental note of a 'to watch' ban list involving the 'general tuck spells', aka cards like Condemn, Spin into Myth, Oblation and the like, simply because with them it's way to easy to shuffle someone's General into their library and completely hose their entire strategy.

At this point, I haven't encountered any Heirloom Commander besides Teferi that needs to be banned. The reason Teferi is banned is twofold. 1) He's banned in normal Heirloom play, and being the general it'd be way too easy to always have him and protect him with countermagic, and 2) more importantly he has a very nasty combo with Knowledge Pool, where he prevents all opponents from playing any spells for the rest of the game. Even with Heirloom restrictions, Chris and I found too many tutor cards that enable one to search for Knowledge Pool, and with Teferi out it can't even be countered. It's possible to squish this combo into other decks, but it isn't going to happen as consistently as when Teferi is the General.

I'm not sure yet if Gatherling should be used for it since I don't know if it'll be an official league with official tournaments yet, or just something for fun that Heirloom players can do in their spare time whenever fellow Heirloom players are online. Like "hey it's 10 p.m. I see 3 Heirloom buddies that have Heirloom Commander decks, let's make a match for funsies"

One thing I've found from playing my beta Heirloom Commander decks against non-Heirloom ones.... the worst cards and deck strategies I hate facing against are too expensive and therefore won't be included. But against the more casual decks, I still had a fighting chance. So it's not like Heirloom Commander decks are terrible.
