So, I saw the announcement that the format is Modern. this raises a lot of questions for me...mainly, what does that mean for people who dont play modern? For example, I pretty much only play limited online...by how i did last month i would have had more than 15 QPs, but no modern deck...is that just "too bad" if you find yourself in that situation? I know there are no roll-over points, so you cant just Q and wait for a format you like, so basically, there is no point in trying to Q until a month when it is ether a limited championship, or a format you have a deck for, unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a deck for one event...is this basically correct????

Meh, not sure whether this is entirely accurate, at least for concept decks. Sometimes an unrefined idea cannot beat the top dogs at first, but with a few suggestions and heavy playtesting, they might get there. Umm you get the promo and buy/sell prices are generally within 10% of each other, so you could just easily buy a deck then sell it after you're done.

right on, i had misread the part about the promo...i had thought it said you only got the promo if you actually play...getting it for Qualifing makes it a little sweeter one question (and i mean this TOTALLY honestly...no sarcasm at all, so plz dot take it that way) could you PM me or something with some bots that buy within 10% of their sell price? that would make it no prob to play, but everywhere i look, if i spent $500 on a deck (witch is really cheap for modern) i could only sell it back for $200-$300 :'( i know we cant name spescific bots on there, but if you could PM me, it would help SO much. thanks a bunch

Last year there was an option to opt of of an end of season championshop and get six boosters and the promo card instead. However, it appears for 2012, this option was removed? Why is this?

because of the bunch of people who qualified for every one and didnt play in a single one. Also q'ing multiple accts and opting out all but one was rampant as well. THey got tired of paying people to not play magic. Annoying admittedly for the ones that we can't play in, but if you have plans you can decide not to Q for it. Now to really complain see the phantom events for sealeds now......

I just noticed this about the MOCS. I must admit that I'm pretty irritated about it and I can't understand why WOTC would make the move. All it does is make the MOCS less appealing to participate in. I'm probably going to play in fewer events as I'll be less motivated to try to qualify for seasons with champion formats that I don't play. I'm sure others will react similarly. How could that be good for wizards?

A long time ago in the world of paper, you would play in a limited Pro Tour Qualifier to qualify for a limited Pro Tour. Same thing for constructed (except for constructed you might play block to qualify for an Extended Pro Tour). More recently, they changed the Pro Tour format so that each one includes both a limited and a constructed component. Wizards wanted winners at each Pro Tour to be more rounded, instead of just being specialists in one particular format. If you qualify for a Modern MOCS playing limited, you either learn Modern or not. Either way you'll get the participation prize.
The MOCS Championship requires players to be skilled in many formats. Its not in anyone's best interest for a limited specialist to get invited only for the world to watch them suck at the constructed portion.

Agreed with the sentiment here about the opt-out option being removed. I would opt out a lot due to having a busy schedule or not having sufficiently practised a constructed format, but would still grind the QPs for the packs and promo.
Ironically I am happy to go back to playing a regular amount with the incentive not there anymore, but can't help but think WOTC loses some money in this case as I play much more when shooting for QPs and there are surely others like me. 6 packs is nice and all but can't really compare to the income from the events required to go from 10 to 15 qps when you only have a weekend left.
In short, opt out gave everyone something to shoot for. Now only a few have a goal. To say that WOTC is sick of rewarding players for not playing doesn't really equate when you consider how much someone has to play to get 15 QPs. So what if someone can't get up at 4am to play a format he or she don't have the cards for - that person probably had to play at least 50 hours to get those QPs!

Eh opt out is now just the promo. Prize cuts as usual.
There is going to be a serious problem when the first limited format has over 1024 players qualified who actually want to play...
Calavera on MTGO I collect Zendikar Foil Basic lands. Trade me yours! Things that I want to see changed on MTGO: 1: 64 man drafts added to rotation of Events. 2: Visual/Audible Notification of disconnect, deckbuild/afk time expiring and round starts. 3: Prize Payouts as close to draft sets as possible. 4: Rotate Classic draft queues monthly! 5: MOCS level events for Classic/Pauper 6: Power 9! 7: Award Promo Cards for Constructed PEs (esp for Legacy/Classic) 8: Program Split option back in! 9: Set Favorite version in deck editor (i.e. always use x swamp) 10: Better sorting of gold cards in deck editor. 11: Bring leagues Back!

We're constantly looking at ways to improve the MOCS. While the opt-out package is gone, we have more than doubled the prize structure for the individual season championships. Part of the reasoning for this is to put more emphasis on the MOCS tournaments themselves. On balance, was this change good or bad? Your feedback is appreciated!
