The PE today didn't fire despite getting an advert on the front page when you log in.. and judging my the most recent tourney results a DE has not fired in the past week...
This is despite the pro tour next week is in this format!
I take it this means that new extended is possibly even a bigger failure than the old extended?
Does this mean superextended (masques forward) is likely to come our way sooner rather than later?
I collect Zendikar Foil Basic lands. Trade me yours! Things that I want to see changed on MTGO: 1: 64 man drafts added to rotation of Events. 2: Friday night Classic/Better event times for Classic. 3: Visual/Audible Notification of disconnect, deckbuild/afk time expiring and round starts. 4: Prize Payouts as close to draft sets as possible. 5: Rotate Classic draft queues monthly! 6: MOCS level events for Classic/Pauper 7: Power 9! 8: Award Promo Cards for Constructed PEs (esp for Legacy/Classic) 9: Program Split option back in! 10: Set Favorite version in deck editor (i.e. always use x swamp) 11: Better sorting of gold cards in deck editor. 12: Bring leagues Back!

Only the PT is in the format. First PTQ season with new extended rules is after the next rotation.

In v 2.5 extended used to fire every time. Of course the format was significantly better back then, but still. Tons of decks to play: aggro loam, domain zoo, ichorid, psychatog, teps, heartbeat, boros, gifts rock, affinity, trinket angel, etc.

I suspect that the big resurgence with Extended wont occur until extended season actually starts up with the final big rotation for extended in October when the format loses TS block and 10th edition.
I know people arent that interested in the current extended format because its rotating so soon here, (for paper magic at our local shop). However a LOT of people have expressed interest in getting into extended after the October rotation, and we are going to start running extended tournaments regularly to go along that. If you remember, the HUGE playerbase and demand increases in magic began around the time of Lorwyn block and continued to pick up steam as time went on.
So I wouldnt call it any sort of failure until we see how things begin to shape out in 2-3 months once the rotiation happens and people get a more stable format with it for a year. I know I wasnt about to touch an extended format with TS block that was going to be rotating again only 3 months after the initial gigantic change to the format was announced. I would rather wait until the format stabilized and would be stable for a year to prepare for. Lots of people I know have been preparing for the post-october extended format, so be prepared to see a resurgence then.

When was the last time extended was significant? It just seems like that format has been in a perpetual cycle of being dead until it's a PT/PTQ format, then it limps around a little, and as soon as that ends, it goes back to dead.
I'm assuming its a simple technological hurdle keeping it from being replaced by BYOS (or is it CYOS?), but how long is the timeframe on that change?

Clearly this one week's stats are enough data to characterize this new format. The format hasn't been written about much, it hasn't had many events, etc. People don't have lists readily available, a rotation is going to change the format in a pretty relevant way in a month, when the actual extended season starts...
Seems like plenty of decent reasons to not be playing it on MTGO just yet.
I can only assume interest will spike after the pro tour, as it will bring the format to the forefront and showcase the format appropriately.

It's too bad the Magic Online Team didn't do the following:
"Hey, you 16-18 players signed in for the Extended tourney:" (I was one of them)
"Since it doesn't look like it will fire, would you guys be okay with us restarting the tourney with a 17 player minimum, and half the prizes? That way you guys would still get to play!"
"Yes? Ok just a sec, let me set up the event, now go ahead!"

Doubt it considering the PT will be old extended rather than new. Still no lists and no relevant tourneys for another 3 months or so till january.

I am sure they would LOVE to do that unfortunatly mtgo doesnt allow the "average" administrator to do such things..

While I agree that one week is not enough to judge... it has been aroud for more than a week.... and Extended was actually firing events a couple of weeks ago.. which seems to indicate that the initial interest has died down....
The whole point of killing old extended was that no one played it outside of the PTQs and PT season... It looks like they are already in the same boat...
Maybe it will pick up after rotation... does anyone know for sure what the format of the PTQs will be come January?

True, but at least it doesn't take any development time to have someone (or train someone) to be available to do this (manipulate / change events). It comes back to how much time they want to invest in customer service. They'll get out of it what they put into it.
