As those of you who are following the Community Cup know, the new sealed format that was hinted at oh so long ago has finally been announced.  The new format consists of FOUR boosters to make a 30-card deck.  We don't have any details yet on when these will be available as queues or what the prize structure will look like (I would guess it will be similar to the current structure).

What do you think of this change?  When resonding, please keep in mind the reasons for the creation of this format: the large entry cost of a regular sealed makes is both a high barrier and makes it difficult to give "enough" prizes.

Assuming this is going to be a common enough means of playing sealed for all sets from now, it means that milling cards at common will have to be very low-powered.

As far as deckbuilding goes, it should lead to higher variance in deck power, but also fewer pools with broken rares.

Stats wise we go from a 23 non-land cards from a 84 card pool to 17 non-land cards from 56 card pool.

4. Don't speak dumb, or you'll be struck dumb.

Remember, the name of the game is heads I win, tails you lose.

Assuming they develop around the format.  Remember, this is a special queue-only format, so it's not like it will be used in paper or even big online events.  I do imagine mill will be a stronger strategy, just like mill is a viable in limited but generally out of the question in constructed.

i dont think mill will get better in total though.  Lets look at the "best" mill card at common from standard.  Tome Scour, at most you would get four of these milling 2/3 of the deck so yeah thats pretty much a win.  However and Im not a mathematician but surely the chance of opening one in every pack has to be slim.  So sure occasionally there will be the unbeatable mill deck...ahh screw it i just remembered traumatize is in M10 as well.   Imagine opening 4 m10 boosters and seeing by rare rare rare chance 2 traumatize and four tome scour....Oh the JOYS!!!
I like fun, but competitive decks.  So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.

Sounds cool. The lower entry barrier is a plus. Will the queues be swiss or single elimination?

And hey, new Format. I guess Jace's Erasure wants to have a word with you.

Anything but nuts is crazy.

The Gold skin v3.1 - The Gold skin for the MtGO-UI is still alive and kicking. Try it out to get an all new experience while playing your favourite game.

My understanding is swiss.

The 30 card minimum is going to feel like pack wars. You take a 14 card booster, add 2 of each basic land, shuffle it up, and that's basically what you have. The four combined boosters will ensure that every card in your deck is playable or otherwise non-blank, which is definitely a positive change from pack wars.

I know nothing about limited, but I think this will play wildly different from either draft or sealed. I think entire games will be decided by the following question: if both players put their entire libraries into play, who would win? 30 card decks are stupidly consistent. If your opening hand is 7 or 8 of those cards then why would you ever mulligan? This is practically freeform. Your Kiln Fiend deck will work every single game. But I don't think tht's a bad thing! Bring it!

So decks are going to be, what, maybe 12 lands and 18 other cards? People might find "favorite decks" that they play every event. Strategies would be posted on the Internet in the form of "Build your pool of 18 from as many of these 14 cards as you opened." I mean, there are many fewer variables to this format than in sealed, less to evaluate, and more obvious choices. It might be a degenerate format in certain blocks. I guess we'll see.

Uh...

That doesn't seem particularly exciting.  Not sure how it will really help deal with the problems of the sealed swiss queues.

I think the format itself will be far less interesting than normal sealed, since the bomb rares will win you more games (since you'll draw them more often), and your opponents will have less removal available.

Also, why couldn't they have told us this was what they wanted to do way-back-when?

I'm not following, current block sealed daily events are the second most popular format. Clearly the "high" barrier isn't a problem for people; the sealed queues weren't firing because the prizes were really bad, just like the premier events we currently have.

I'm sure I'm missing a reference with "enough" in quotes but what exactly was stopping them from adding more prizes?

I heard we're supposed to post in green if we don't like the new forums.

Agreed, again. I was expecting something completely different.
