Legacy vs Classic

Online we currently have the classic format, I have heard rumors about a Legacy format planned for this year.  Paper has the vintage format but most of the cards played in vintage are not online.

I wanted to start a thread to discuss the following two points:

1)  What cards would be restricted/banned in this online Legacy format?
2)  Would classic change its restricted/banned list?

a good bet on bannings would be the legacy banned/restricted list...

as far as classic who knows
I like fun, but competitive decks.  So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.

The rumors you heard are true but there is no current date announced for the split.

1. I'd imagine we would have similar B&R as legacy has in paper. We'd have banned cards like Windfall and Gush . That would give online players a true Legacy format.
2. I hope so because then Classic would then be MTGO's version of Vintage even without certain key cards.

1) Legacy already exists in paper.  Once Legacy launches on Magic Online, banned list for Legacy would match the existing banned list:

www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.a...

2) The Classic restricted list is based upon what we feel is the healthiest for the Classic format.  Since we never ban cards in Classic for power-level reasons however, Classic and Legacy will always be unique in their own way.

I'm hoping that when they split the formats, they leave Classic's restricted list as they have it, rather than immediately synchronize it with Vintage's.  I think that Vintage has restricted a lot of cards over the years that needed to be restricted then, but don't now, and I think if WotC was making a restricted list from scratch they would do a better job now than the current Vintage restricted list.  Classic is that chance, to make a restricted list from scratch, and I think they should take it.

Thanks - interesting stuff.

On #1 - makes sense, the only difference is several of these banned cards are not online.  I am also somewhat surprised not see the duals at least restricted, were they ever?

On #2 - it seems like classic will be the online version of vintage then, in a sense.  For what its worth, just by the names I would think the terms should be reveresed, the name Legacy to me should include less bans then the name classic (but this is just a verbiage item).

1.  uh, what?  duals have never been restricted, what could possibly lead to that thought?

2.  Legacy is legacy, online gets zero input to it's name.  At some point in the future they might link up Classic and Vintage, but that depends entirely on if they release all of the key Vintage restricted cards online. (Power 9, etc.)

As far as online Legacy missing cards, it is a safe assumption that MED4 will include all tourney playable Legacy cards that aren't yet online, except for those in the sets yet to be released at that time (Urza's Destiny and Masques block.)

4. Don't speak dumb, or you'll be struck dumb.

So it will have Sinkhole, Maze of ith and regrowth....

Not much of a set unless they put a lot of Vintage stuff in it

I collect Zendikar Foil Basic lands. Trade me yours!
Things that I want to see changed on MTGO:
1: 64 man drafts added to rotation of Events.
2: Friday night Classic/Better event times for Classic.
3: Visual/Audible Notification of disconnect, deckbuild/afk time expiring and round starts.
4: Prize Payouts as close to draft sets as possible.
5: Rotate Classic draft queues monthly!
6: MOCS level events for Classic/Pauper
7: Power 9!
8: Award Promo Cards for Constructed PEs (esp for Legacy/Classic)
9: Program Split option back in!
10: Set Favorite version in deck editor (i.e. always use x swamp)
11: Better sorting of gold cards in deck editor.
12: Bring leagues Back!

I agree.  Unless they do something like reprint duals, I don't see how they can sell the set without at least some of the P9.

re-releasing FoW or something may be nice and will certainly help ease the barrier of entry price for new players
