I feel embarassed for puttin this up here but hopefully it will save someone else from getting tricked.  Yesterday a player going by [scammer name here] asked me to trade him some cards in exchange for pokerstars, fultilt, or paypal money.  I agreed and when the time came to make the trade he said he would send the money after he got the cards.  I told him no he needed to send the money first and he said that he would not do it because someone scammed him the other day but that he din't want to lose his account for scaming.  Anyway after a while he finally convinced me to send the cards over and what do you know no pokerstars money in my account.  I feel like a complete idiot but I hope this does not happen to anyone else.

I appreciate the warning, and sympathize with your loss.

However, I have to point out that on the boards you're not allowed to post anyones name.  You can and should report this person to WotC customer service, they may take action against him.

It is a good warning in general, if you give the cards away to someone, there is no gaurantee that they will give you what they promised in return from any other site.

It's also worth warning, that even if they send you paypal cash before you send them the cards, they can still file for a refund with paypal, and paypal will side in their favour, so be careful who you do business with.

Once again, sorry for your loss.

Sorry you had this happen.

Just a good reminder to remember, when dealing with any random individual via the internet, assume they are a dirtbag with no ethics or morals......ALWAYS!!!!

If they are approaching you first, they need to earn the trust.  Never just hand them your trust, they will abuse it....ALWAYS!!

Only perform trades within the system, and buy all your tickets directly from within the client.

WotC will not compensate you at all for trades that occur outside the trading system. As far as they are concerned, you really did agree to give a bunch of cards and recieve nothing in return, as that is all that the trading system shows.

This sort of "scam" is certainly not unique to MTGO.  Nor is it a particulary new development - it's been going on for a long time.

The most alarming thing is that anyone would be taken in by it - which leads me to believe you are new to online transactions of any sort and also makes me think it's possible WoTC is not doing enough to warn new users - to which for many MTGO might be the gateway to online transactions - about the perils associated with trading outside the system

Saying "we're not liable" is nice inside the ToC, but how about "We recommend against..."  Especially as this is a game meant for 13+

Just a suggestion.

We have said this in the past, and I am more than happy to lend official weight to the statement. While not violating the Terms of Service, trading outside of the game is not recommended or supported in any way and is a "buyer beware" situation.

It is unfortunate that there are unscrupulous players who try to take advantage of others, but once trades are taken outside of our system there is very little we can do. The safest way to protect yourself is to only trade with players you trust and limit yourself to object-for-object trading. If you ever have questions, feel free to contact Game Support or ask an in-game ORC.

I'm just saying, maybe that message could be included in part of the welcome email to new users.  Seems important enough.

Never do cash sales with anyone unless you know them personally or they are WELL established within the community.  Rating means nothing.  Unless that person has been conducting business for many years you are really just flipping a coin, and even then, you can get scammed...

Anyone remember remember that italian that went by the name ----ichio, well he went out in a blaze of scamming glory taking about 10k with him, so you're never really safe

Also, guys who deal in poker are generally unsafe, there are very very few reputable people who deal in poker, and unfortunately, the ones who are secure are foreign which just adds to your insecurity...

Just sell your tix for cash to buyers you KNOW are safe or sell them to a friend or local shop

I in no way hold wotc responsible for what happened and i realize that it was at my own risk.  I fell for the trap that the player did not want to have his account terminated for scamming but i realize this was rather dumb of me.  Just do not want it to happen to others.
