Does the collection screen pause/freeze like every 5 seconds for everyone else, or is this just a problem with my computer? It's intensely frustrating, and makes setting cards to trade an experience in pain.

This is generally a function of available RAM. The more RAM the faster loading/searching/building is.

If you're on XP or higher I'd recommend at least 2 GB (3-4 would show a HUGE improvement over 2 though)

Awesome, so now, when I save a txt copy of a deck, the program inexplicably replaces certain cards with other versions. For example, I added the Twilight Shepherd from Shadowmoor to a deck, but when I re-open the deck, the version listed is from the Demon/Angel theme deck.

Why is this a problem? Because I’m trying to create a wishlist, with specific versions of cards. I mean, it’s not earth-shattering, but it is profoundly annoying and sort of invalidates the point of making a wishlist.

Man, I hate to jump on the "v3-sucks" bandwagon, but seriously, this could be the least user-friendly piece of software I've ever used.

hmmm ive had a similar issue but itss normally when loading a .txt file from another site say mtgotraders that they add all the promo cards in.  Normally i just check it before i load it as a wishlist. Its time consuming but can save cash.

As far as the trading issue I've found right clicking and selecting the amount to make tradable tends to freeze less

I have 8 GB of Ram with vista 64 configured so that I actually use all of it.

When I choose "# owned = 0" and forget to make only regular cards (i.e. excluding foils) the program will freeze for 15 - 30 seconds.  Sometimes it pauses to a screen that says something like 'MTGO is not responding, please wait.'

So yes, this is a real problem.  I've noticed more lag during 'peak' times so I try and do my foil sorting late at night when I have less chance of lagging.

On the flip side, when I am looking through my collection, I rarely have any pauses.

It is most likely substituting cards you own.  I've had this "problem" before when loading a deck for the game and realized the version in the deck had been traded away.  Dunno if it still works like this it was well over a year ago.  I thought it was all good though because I was loading the deck for a game not a Wishlist of Cards I Do Not Own.

It must of improved then.  I to have tried doing things like that early on with Vista Ultimate 64bit and 8gigs and encountered "lagg" or "crashes".  Mostly when loading a 250 card deck or requesting 1 copy of each card in my collection.  Kinda funny as I am able to run 78 MAJOR oblivion mods in 1920x1600 on 22" monitor or 1920x1080 on a 42" HD TV but stall on a card game.→all hail V4um

Now let be fair... There are sevearal thousand *different* bitmaps being loaded with you perform that in MTGO and nowhere near that many in Oblivion.

I'm not saying MTGO is an optimized piece of work, but your comparrison to Oblivion seems poor.

It would be more like trying to load several K worth of thumbnails in an image folder and displaying 18 of them at a time - or better yet, opening 18 of them in Photoshop and trying to quickly continue to load 18 more on a single click.

To be fair... there is no need to defend MTGO. It is a well known example of very bad programming. MTGO client is unable to relase the ram it eats up. If you browse collections it will get up to 1 GB of ram, then you need to restart the client (or it will crash by itself).

Not for me.
I've never had an issue with MTG:O releasing RAM in the current version (V3).
It was a known issue in V2 but it's not a problem now.

Not to dispute your claim, but perhaps there is something else at work in that situation. Maybe it is a combination of factors on both ends that results in such slow loading speeds, similiar to click-lag (/tipothehat to Natedawg)
I just gave it a shot on my client and it loaded all cards owned >= 0 (foils inc) in 6.3s
