This morning, Aaoron Forsythe (director of R&D) tweets: "Hey data-vaulters! Don't look for handouts; write mods like the WoW players did!".  (ref)

First, don't ever try and compare MTGO to WoW because you'll just embarrass yourself.

Secondly, when WoW was released in 2004, came with a whole set of tools (provided by Blizzard themselves!) to customize the UI and write mods.

It's so frustrating to watch a great game (MtG) be handicapped by such poor software.

All I want is WotC to step up and admit how BAD the software is.  Really, that's ALL I want.  Because until either that happens, or we see actual results (and we've already waited 1.5 years - more than enough time to see something) I am afraid that they really are blind to the problems.

Can we define "data-vaulters" first?  I have never heard that term before, and as such I am hesitant to say it is even related to MTGO.

I think it sources from here: strategy.channelfireball.com/featured-ar...

And if that is indeed the case, it does make Aaron look like an idiot.

Firstly, they HAVE admitted that MTGO is not where it should be (internal-speak for it's bad). In fact, Worth has said this multiple times now, as has Gordon. They've even gone as far as to say that the original team was bot even close to being up to the job.

Secondly. AaFo's comments are completely ludicrous. We CAN'T get the data from our own mods because a) we can't mod the client and b) even if we could, we STILL don't have access to that data. *mind boggling*

Tend to agree with the "foot-in-mouth" assessment here, though I would give him the benefit of saying that he wasn't so much trying to compare the game to WoW as he was hoping to emulate WoW.  And say what you will about WoW, it's incredibly popular and successful and it works really well.  Heck, if MtGO had any one of those three things I'd be happy.

Yes, Mr Forsythe is making a fool of himself.

For us to do our magic with the data we need to be able to access it in a way that beats having to use OCR libraries and mimicing user actions at the OS level.

The issue is the same both wen trying to track user behavior during games as when tracking market behavior.  The tools are junk, and the supreme overlords have no interests in making them better. Even the best commercial bots are nothing short of pedestrian, if just because the system is designed inefficiently.

MTGO would bloom if it had a well staffed team of skilled, motivated developers behind it. As it is, it feels like an unresponsive relic.

When I click on the link in my post, it links to the article fine, but when I click on the one from your quote of my post, it gets truncated.  Stupid pile-of-garbage.
