Please be aware that the CBSbot has recently rebranded itself. The MTGO Library Bot or "MLBot" appears to be a new version of the CBSbot and may contain some of the same malicious functionality.

Please use care when running addons or bots as you may be exposing your personal information for misuse. Whenever you allow a third party access to your computer you are putting your information at risk. This can include seemingly harmless programs such as Bots, Addons, and “helper” type programs. Unless you have coded these programs yourself, you have no control over what information they are accessing, including your passwords or other private information. We strongly caution that you avoid all third party programs.

As always, if you feel that you have been compromised, or would like to report suspicious activity, please use our "report suspicious activity" link at: http://wizards.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wiz … faqid=1236 .

Pursuant to the Terms of Service, Wizards of the Coast is not responsible for any losses or damages you may incur as a result of running third party applications in conjunction with Magic Online.

Technically, Magic Online fits this definition too.  We give the client access to our system, we didn't code it ourselves, and we have nothing but the word of WotC that it isn't busy stealing our bank codes and mailing lists while we blithely play games.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not accusing WotC of any such thing.  I just thought it interesting that, as third party software (as in not part of the OS), you would warn us against running third party software.

As in everything else, it's risk assessment.  How likely is it that Magic Online contains malware?  Extremely unlikely (but possible).  So unlikely though that most of us don't even think about the fact that, technically, it COULD contain malware.

On the other hand, what's the likelihood that the CBS bot (under whatever name) contains malware.  Personally, given it's history, I think it highly likely.  I wouldn't recommend any bots in the first place, but if a friend were really determined, I'd do my best to at least steer them away from CBS bots.

As a final note, Thank You for letting us know about the name change.  It wasn't my intent for this post to sound like a bash.  I certainly hope that's not how it comes across.  I just thought it funny that a third party software provider would warn us against running any third party software that we didn't program ourselves! :D

(Yes, I know that you were using a different base for determining what is or isn't third party software.  But really, anything not from Microsoft or the manufacturer of your particular hardware is third party software. )

I'm just a Pigment of your imagination.

Just reading their FAQ will prove that it is the same group as CBSbot. The poor English is a clear giveaway.

This "bot" is nothing more than a scam to steal passwords. Multiple thefts by the owner have been CONFIRMED by WoTC in the past. Their software has been CONFIRMED to steal passwords (Google and you can find Wireshark screenshots proving this). Downloading this bot is like sending money to some guy in Nigeria hoping that you'll be the one guy on Earth who doesn't get scammed.

AVOID this bot like the plague.

Definitely agreed. Way too many people don't read these forums.

Ahlyis: The reason I, at least, will trust WotC's program and am less inclined to trust bots (I would not run a bot unless I had compiled it on my machine from source code I had read and/or written), is because WotC is a corporation, known in the real world, and if WotC distributed malware, they would be held accountable in the real world. Therefore, I'm confident WotC won't distribute malware, because they would have way too much to lose.

Oh, I agree fully.

My comment was just on the irony over a third party software supplier telling us not to run third party software!

:D

They're not third party, they're the second party.

I don't think they actually were telling us not to. What they were telling us is, they assume no liability - rightfully so - if we do, so we need to be careful what third party software we run. A. k. a. only run software we trust, and only trust software that deserves to be trusted.

Which is not a contradiction - WotC's software, namely MTGO, is trusted.

The difference between a third party SW provider that you can sue the snot out of if they break the law/violate their word or contract with you and someone that you can't sue the snot out of is huge from an accountability standpoint.

Stealing would cost Wizards a bunch of their legitimately earned money . As such, the people running the company have a vested interest in not doing it. That's not 100% trustable, but that plus their vulnerability to a lawsuit in those circumstances gives them a significant margin of trust.
