Hi everyone,

I have some exciting news to share with you all today. Late tomorrow afternoon Pacific Time, the MOL III team will present what is our release candidate to a group consisting of many of the members of our executive team for final launch review. After the various teams working on MOL present their cases, we will have a “go/no-go” decision from our president, Greg Leeds.

The members of the MOL team are highly confidant that we’ve got our ducks in a row, and that we’ll get a “go” decision tomorrow. Assuming that is the case, MOL 2.5 will be turned off (for good) sometime Wednesday morning. The system will go into no-pay mode around 5am PST Wednesday morning, as well. At this point we will begin the process of data migration to the new system, and we hope to be back online with MOL III by mid-late next week, assuming all goes well with the transfer. I will post updates on our progress as we move along.

Keep in mind we’re going to turn the new system on with very limited functionality in the first few hours/days, and slowly roll out the features as we see stability. So what you’ll probably see right away is casual play only, followed shortly by drafts, followed shortly after that by a few PE’s, as we ramp up to “normal” event schedules.

Our release candidate has been code “locked” for a while now, and you’ll probably see the first major service pack (SP1) roughly two weeks post launch, with bug fixes and hot fixes happening in the time between that and launch. Some of the issues the community is most concerned about are addressed in that service pack, such as the text size issue, and others. We also hope to have some good news for you all regarding multiplayer very soon, but it’s a bit early yet to go into details there. More on that soon, and this is of course assuming all goes relatively smoothly with the launch.

It’s been a long and tiring road, and we’ve made our share of mistakes, but I truly believe releasing this product is the right thing for the long term health of the brand and for our customers as well. The initial few weeks will likely be trying as well, but now that we can put 2.5 to bed for good, we should be able to make some great progress in getting back the features and functionality you all want and deserve. The biggest thing I’d like you all to keep in mind is that this is definitely a work in progress, and if you have feedback about specific items/features/lack of them then I encourage you to post your concerns on the message boards. We do read them, and many of your posts directly affected development in the process.

Exciting, terrifying, thrilling, mortifying, and mind blowing…all at once. Thanks for hanging in there.

Ah yes the famed miracle patch every new game or in this case new version of a game that isn't working correctly at release has one. Well good luck with that.

Oh the RC we have works correctly (as far as we can tell, of course!), but it's just that we had to, for many reasons, lock code down a couple weeks ago.

In the meantime we can't have devs sitting on their hands doing nothing, so this service pack is going to be about a months worth of "stuff", hence the size and the importance.

Worth, I just now logged into the 2.5 client, and nowhere do I see any announcement to the masses that the game is going dark. Just a note saying to look at the website for v3 information isn't going to cut it-- I doubt many really look at the announcements bar on the opening screen much less read it. The note on the kicker is overly generic, too. You are only opening yourself (meaning WotC) up to a lot of angry players by not communicating to the entire community within the client.

The same time they release version 4.0.

On a related note, I presume Duke Nukem Forever is to be included with V3, correct?

That's how release candidates work...you do a code freeze and then test, and if everything comes up perfect (or at least good enough) the release candidate becomes the release.
