Pauper (All Commons format) What is Pauper?Pauper is a format which restricts your deck to using only cards that are Commons. With regard to Magic Online, the Pauper format also allows you the ability to Proxy certain cards, in a limited fashion. This means that if a card has been released at both the common rarity and at another rarity, you may use either version of the card as long as there is a common version of the card which is legal in the format. For example; Counterspell was printed at the Common rarity in 7th Edition and again at the Uncommon rarity in MEII (Masters Edition 2). Cards from both sets are now legal only for Classic based games and you may use either version of Counterspell (or any future version that is released) in a Classic based Pauper game. It also doesn't matter what set or product the card was released in. So the Ice Age common reprints from the Coldsnap theme decks are still considered part of their respective format, even though their availability may be scarcer. The rule is: If a card exists as a common in the format then it's legal to play it in a Pauper deck. What are the requirements?Like most other formats, Pauper decks should conform to the specific game type requirements (60 card deck for Std or Ext, 250 for Prismatic etc) in addition to the commonality restriction. Currently, only Classic pauper games are sanctioned which means that you will need a deck with a minimum 60 card and optional 15 card sideboard. The following sets have been released Online
Show
Commons from these sets are legal in Pauper Classic
Duel Decks: Jace vs Chandra Duel Decks: Elves vs Goblins ------------- Masters Edition 1 Masters Edition 2 ------------- Mirage Visions Weatherlight Tempest ------------- 7th Edition 8th Edition 9th Edition 10th Edition ------------- Invasion Planeshift Apocalypse Odyssey Torment Judgement Onslaught Legions Scourge Mirrodin Darksteel Fifth Dawn Champions of Kamigawa Betrayers of Kamigawa Saviors of Kamigawa Ravnica Guildpact Dissension Coldsnap* Timespiral Timespiral Timeshifted* Planar Chaos Future Sight Lorwyn Morningtide Shadowmore Eventide Shards of Alara
*When Coldsnap was released, each of the theme decks contained some 'reprinted' cards from Ice Age and Alliances. All the commons from those theme decks (even those with the Ice Age and Alliances symbols) are Pauper legal. *Timespiral Timeshifted cards (the ones with the Purple rarity) are ALL considered to be Rare and none of them are legal in any type of Pauper.
Cards Currently banned in Pauper* (as of 9/01/08): Cranial Plating (*By definition, Rares and Uncommons are disallowed, with the exception of the aforementioned Proxies)

Power and Synergy: Just because a deck is built using all commons, that does not mean it isn't going to be strong. Many players make the mistake of assuming that a Pauper deck will lack power and/or synergy. This is not the case.
...This seems completely out of place. I would cut it.

It's a fragmentary placeholder for a more detailed explanation. Just like "Brief History" is a placeholder for some relevant background info, when I can corner TW and SpikeBoy... Not only is it out of place, it's wrong. I love pauper, but there's no denying a deck that restricts itself to just commons is going to be weaker than a deck that makes full use of an available card pool. Saying otherwise is akin to saying that sealed decks are no less powerful than constructed decks. Or that block decks are no weaker than vintage. If you're comparing a tournament level pauper deck to a tournament level non-pauper deck, it WILL lack in power and synergy. Period.
I think the point you want to get across is that the format is played at a highly competitive level. Players take it seriously, compete for tix, and their decks are well-tuned. But that has nothing whatsoever to do with the power level of the cards/decks played in the format compared to other formats.
The paragraph detracts from the overall quality of your post, I'd strongly suggest you cut it.
