Bane Alley Broker is a very well-designed and cool card; I just wish its power level was somewhat more tempting, since it's kind of a trap card that's worse than Divination .  Sure, trap cards have their place, and Development seems to dislike pure long term card advantage these days (since Jayemdae Tome was apparently considered on the edge of too powerful for M13; Sphinx's Revelation is there, but it's one-shot), but still.   Archivist was a dollar rare in 7th Edition and didn't break any formats or see any serious play; it's too bad a neat design had to be stuck on a card whose value mostly comes from the 0/3 wall aspect.

It's weird; it seems that some of the best players can't stop winning at Gatecrash, despite all the frustration and swinginess that many people (like me) experience. Maybe it is a skill-intensive format after all.

The latter is a rare, this one's an uncommon, meaning it has to be balanced for a completely different format: limited. And there the Broker is powerful enough.

In those times, there was a very real possibility that every time you sat down to play a game of Magic you may have seen a card you had never seen before.  [. . .]  While we may never be able to recreate that level of mystery again, we do at least enjoy fostering a baseline level through releasing new sets and encouraging metagames to not stagnate.

This is so sad but true. Makes you hate this age of instant information.
