First off, vintage is fairly new to me. I've been playing standard for a few years with minimal success and finally got a bit burned out with the format. After realizing that my kitchen table reanimator bore a striking likeness to some vintage lists (minus power cards), I looked into the format more and now fear that I'm hooked on it. I haven't played any formal vintage events because they are very scarce in my state (ME), but this leads me to my questions... Even if the event allows proxies, is it looked upon as 'bad ettiquette' to do so? I know most magic players aren't as 'elitist' as some I've met, but having not experienced the vintage tourney scene, I have to wonder... Also on the topic of 'ettiquette', is it frowned upon to use foils in a format dominated by pre-foil cards? So like I said, strange questions, I just thought it might be good to know in case I find an event to play. I'd rather not offend anyone on my first go at it... thanx for any replies. I know this section doesn't see a lot of traffic, so i'll be patient.

Welcome to Vintage! Your questions are good; etiquette is important in a format like this.
Proxies are not only not frowned upon, they are encouraged. Vintage players know that proxies are neccessary to keep new players coming in, and we always want to introduce new players to the format to have fun with us! If your meta is competitive, proxies will be virtually ubiquitous, except maybe one or two players.
The only etiquette involved with proxies is in their grade; proxies require a certain amount of thoroughness to be both "polite" and legal. You don't have to put a lot of effort into making them; Sharpied lands are pretty normal. But you do need to include name, cost, and at least shorthand rules text so that the card is recognizable.
Foils are also just as popular here in Vintage as they are in other formats. Feel free to have any foils you like, so long as they are either legal cards, or legal proxies.
Etiamnunc sto, etiamsi caelum ruat.

Great! Good to know... the number of proxies allowed varies by event, I'm told normally between 5-10, which is fine if I'm only lookin to proxy a few powers... thanx for the reply, I'm hopin I can find some vintage locally so I can try it out! Seems like a fun and powerful format.
