this was a question in a recent cranialinsertion article: === Q: If Fathom Mage < /a> enters the battlefield with counters from Master Biomancer < /a> or something, do I get to draw cards? A: Yes! If Fathom Mage enters the battlefield with counters on it, that does count as placing counters on Fathom Mage. === (www.cranialinsertion.com/article/771) i'm having trouble understanding this. in my mind, i thought that there's a replacement effect, that makes Fathom Mage enter the battlefield already with a +1/+1 counter on it. "whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed on fathom mage" sounds to my ears like for this to trigger, Fathom Mage has to go from a game state where she has N +1/+1 counters on her, to a game state where he has N+1 +1/+1 counters on her. this never happens, so i thought her triggered ability wouldn't trigger? so can someone clarify where i'm wrong, using comp rules to help me understand this?

sorry -- upon closer inspection of the comp rules, i found an answer:
== 121.6. If a spell or ability refers to a counter being "placed" on a permanent, it means putting a counter on that permanent while it's on the battlefield, or that permanent entering the battlefield with a counter on it as the result of an effect (see rule 614.1c). ===
