This card Braids, Conjurer Adept , states that at the beginning of your upkeep you can play a card of various type onto the battlefield, but it doesn't state whether you pay the mana cost... Does that mean you don't have to?

you are not casting it, so you don't have the option of paying the casting cost

So does it replace the upkeep step (Main Phase 1?), or do you then use your turn as normal post this ability?

It doesn't replace any phase, so everything is the same (with the exception that each player can put a card from their hand into play at the beginning of each of their upkeep)

Unfortunately, VCLs do not currently have the tools necessary to take moderation actions directly. VCLs submit their actions to ORCs, who then actually perform the action. This processing can take between a few minutes and several hours, depending on how busy/attentive the ORCs are.

If you see something that needs VCL attention, please use this thread (MTGO) or this thread (paper) to make a request and a VCL will look at it as soon as possible.  CoC violations should be reported to Customer Service using the "report post" button. With this card on the battlefield, at the beginning of your upkeep (BEFORE you draw a card), you choose a card with one of the specified type (artifact, creature or land) and you PUT it on the battlefield. You don't cast the artifact/creature so it cannot be countered and your opponnent will only know what it is when it is already on the battlefield, and you do not play the land either. So later in the turn, during one of your main phases, you will be able to PLAY a land.

Rules question? Have you read the Basic rulebook already? No? Why not take some time to do that?

How to autocard (do this to specify a card in your posts):
Type [c]Black Lotus[/c] to get Black Lotus .
Type [c=Black Lotus]The Overpowered One[/c] to get The Overpowered One .

Braids has a triggered ability.

At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player may put an artifact, creature, or land card from his or her hand onto the battlefield.

They take the following format:

At/When/Whenever [EVENT]{,If [CONDITION]},[EFFECT].

In Braids case,
EVENT = beginning of each player's upkeep
EFFECT = that player may put an artifact, creature, or land card from his or her hand onto the battlefield

Her trigger has no CONDITION, but something like Afflicted Deserter does.

Without Braids, your turn normally goes like this:

1- Untap your cards
2- Upkeep: do nothing
3- Draw one card
4- Main Phase + Combat Phase + Main Phase + End Turn

With Braids, your turn becomes:

1- Untap your cards
2- Upkeep: pick a card (artifact, creature or land) from among those in your hand and slap it on the table
3- Draw one card
4- Main Phase + Combat Phase + Main Phase + End Turn
