If you like this system I can go in to more detail about what the traits do, but I think it is important that we make each setting unique. Since, you know, each setting is unique.
One last thing, how do we go about getting trait points?
I think we should have general flavor traits and setting specific ones. As for races, I'd like some consistency in the races across the planes, but we could go 50/50 on that, with 2 generic and two plane specific racial traits. Five trait points are given during character creation, the rest are given by the DM during the story for minor and greater accomplishments. Say, crossing an ocean, winning an important fight, completing a quest... Here's how I see basic game elements converted to an RPG setting: Card Types:
- Planeswalker: N/A
- Instant: A quick spell that you can cast without much preparation (can be cast as a response to an enemy action)
- Sorcery: A spell that takes a couple of seconds to cast
- Enchantment: An effect that last until the end of an encounter
- Artifact: a physical thingy
- Creature: the player characters and most allies and enemies you encounter
- Land: I was thinking of having lands be represented by the locale you're in. So each place would have a land-type associated and that would effect some abilities (Landfall, by the way, is movements in the roil, so you could represent this by having the DM do a "landfall" check, which would either cause the terrain to deform, or the type of land to shift)
Other game concepts:
Mana: I was thinking (but this was last night, so it could be a terribly idea) that it could represent a type of "action points" you can spend each turn. You start with 1 colored mana and then you can get more by some process (I have an idea for this, but I need to test it first.)
- Card draw: I have no idea on this actually. It should give you more options in some way, though.
- Power/Toughness: I see power as something that decides how much damage you do. There's a Star Wars system that uses flat numbers to deal damage, instead of rolls, and this would be pretty useful in a text-based system, since we would have less dice to roll. Toughness is harder. I've had several ideas, but they all sucked. For some ideas it would kill the players too fast (Toughness as HP) and others made Toughness to different from the card game (Toughness as damage absorption)

I like this thread.
I have decided that my charecter is a battle mage.
What about the creature types if they are not on any other planes?

You mean like Surrukar? Well, you just make sure they have traits that might make sense on different planes as well.

Aaaauuuugh! I keep getting stuck at trying to make Traits. I don't know if I can just type out the whole character's sheet (especially since I can't seem to sit down and work at it until it's 3 in the morning); so I'm just going to throw some trait ideas out there and see what you guys think. Keep in mind these are all just ideas for traits applicable to my character; which in base looks like this: Color: Red Race: Minotaur Class: Warrior Sub-class: Ally (And yeah, I still haven't come up with a name for him.) Animal Instincts (requires animorphic race): You gain the passive ability to sense natural disasters early. Strength of the Bull (requires Minotaur): In combat, you gain 1 extra power. Inner Fire (requires red): It becomes harder for you to be dissuaded from your goals.* Rage (requires Color Red; Class Warrior; or Class Beserker): If dealt damage in combat, you may enter a Rage. When in rage, you gain 2 attack, you cannot be reasoned with, and cannot be healed Military Training (requires Warrior or Soldier): You have been taught how to deal damage more effectively.** Familiarity with Weapons (requires Warrior or Soldier): You can use a wider variety of weapons. Shared Power (requires Ally): In combat, if attacking with at least one other player, all attacking players recieve 1 extra power. *This assumes a system (using numbers) to determine if you can persuade and coerce someone. This would grant I guess a +1 advantage to me. **I'm used to an attack/defense system where defense has some percentage effect on damage dealt; so this ability would (in said system) subtract from that percentage effect. In this game, I have not a clue how that would work, but I wouldn't use it on this character anyway, so meh. I'm not sure how else to use Ally. I'd like some mechanic that recognizes alliegiences in the game (like, we state "we have allied for the time being" or something). But I don't really know how to work it purposefully into the more core mechanics otherwise. Just to round out my character here: Equipment: Hammer (weapon) *; A couple of found Grappling Hook s (used for climbing, not weapons); a few portable torches for dark places (hey, when you're as big as a minotaur, that's portable) *Card not intended to be the hammer he uses. Just a visual. Stats: If using, say, 5 points for power, toughness, and intelligence as the parameters: Power 3 Toughness 2 Intelligence 0 If 6 or 7, then P/T = 3/3 and 4/3, respectively. Intelligence would stay at 0. Spells: None. I doubt something dumber than a goblin has much of a head for spells.

UPDATE: Could every player post his or her character by Sunday? That way I have some time to prepare and we can get started next week. Just use whatever system feel natural to you to write up your character. If I think something doesn't work for whatever reason, I'll just openly state it and we can work it out together. Thanks.

I took the liberty of creating a character sheet. You can edit it, but please don't in order to create your character, just copy it for that. You are allowed to make structural changes and the traits list can certainly be added to. Rules:
- You start with 5 trait points.
- Your plane is Zendikar
- Your Power is added to your damage roll (meaning it increases the damage you do with attacks and abilities - not spells).
- Your Toughness reduces the incoming damage.
- For your attributes (Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity) you can give 3 to the most powerful, 2 to the lower one and then 1. You can increase one attribute by 1, by removing two points somewhere else. These govern various actions you can take (including your chance to hit). Strength for melee character, Dexterity for ranged attacks and Intelligence for spells. Your Intelligence also tells you how many spells you can have at once.
So, feedback? And this also serves as a reminder that I'd like your character by Sunday. If you've already posted your character, just do so again, so I've got them all in one place

So, here's most of mine: Name: Ha Garn Race: Minotaur Color: Red Class: Warrior, Ally Known spells: none. Equipment: Hammer , main weapon (not enchanted, just a standard hammer); some grappling hook s, for climbing (not utilized as weapons); a couple of torches , for caves and tombs (large size for large hands). Story:
Show
Born in Akoum, Ha Garn spent most of his childhood in Goma Fada, the caravan city. There he was taught essentials of survival in Zendikar, and how best to use his strength. By the time he was a dozen winters, he was already proving himself by being one of Goma Fada's many protectors, batting off even the occasional dragon (though not without help).
The years in Goma Fada saw Ha Garn slowly cultivate his physical strength and his teamwork, learning to trust others' power as much as his own. Never one for planning, he nevertheless found himself a key piece in a number of skirmishes all over Akoum, having the strength of a giant and the ability to follow orders. All in all, rather intelligent for a minotaur. He's even managed a finishing blow on his own initiative.
Now in his mid-30s, Ha Garn acts as a protector and guide of sorts for wayfarers, wanderers, and adventurers of all kinds. Not really known for his directional certainty, he advertises his muscle. He most often finds himself in Ondu, preferring both the suitably vertical terrain (hooves make him surprisingly nimble on mountainsides), and its abundant supply of large creatures. Fighting something with a couple of limbs and a head has always been easier for him than facing off against the ground, or herons, or even those accursed beaches. Going by the numbers you said to use, I'll opt for 4 strength, 1 dexterity, and 0 intelligence. Also, the trait system is what has been tripping me up from the beginning. Since I've been a little sick today and can't think well, I'm not even going to finish off the traits right now. Complete open-ness is my one weakness, besides.

This might be a design issue, but I think when we have a decent "rulebook" with all the info in it, it gets easier, as, well, you don't have to come up with traits from scratch. I should have time tomorrow, so I'll see what I can cook up for a Minotaur Warrior Ally.
