Quality is relative.
I don't have an egosig because I'd rather my ideas be judged on their merits than on mine.

Power cosigns with cost. Try not to be so fixated on power because it generally means that it's going to wring you dry in the market. That's one of the main reasons I stopped playing (I couldn't afford it). And the way the game is being developed in this way, it's as though the game has lost its essence; when they're just printing cliché powerful things for profit, at the expense of the players. That ain't the game to me. It makes me feel so exploited, so take advantage of—taken for granted. There's no balance, no diversity—and everyone is limited to a single standard format deck type to win—that's boring.

This is apart of the whole reason I started writing more detailed articles about Magic (as a fantasy game and a product), stressing the importance of flavor and balance. To try and break that ice which has frozen the their hearts towards the game and players. However, you'll all likely know from your own experiences how the players can be—and it's the majority that decides this to a greater measure. My efforts alone might not be enough so long as there are all those bad attitude, stuck-up, sardonic players out there giving the game a bad vibe. This is also why I've encouraged everyone not to be like that, because it degenerates the aura of the game. I've been very bro about things, and I've always encouraged others to be the same for this reason alone.

How about the theoretical creature Bearandahalf, a 3/3 creature for ? Definately over the standards for a 2-mana creature. However, I don't see it destroying Standard and needing a ban any time soon. So what does that say about it? Is it 'acceptable'? Just a symptom of power creep?

That is conditional. And it's not "is always really a 3/3 with no downside Flinthoof Boar conditional", but rather "just a 1/1 half the time" conditional.

Take each basic style of card and push it a bit. The best Divination they could print is if it cost 1u. The best Lava Axe they could print is if it cost 2r. They could print Glory Seeker for w. But could you really say any one of the three cards I just mentioned is better than the others?

No, but you can say when a card is pushed too far. Now, I don't know if Divination for 1U would break Storm or not, but it would definitely make it far better.

That one in Standard thats a board wipe for in many situations and the way it seems not unreasonable when it's in responce to my playing of Entreet the Angels .

I'd try and make the divination for work in every as many decks as I could if it existed.

Thragtusk could be soo reasonable if either its mana cost ended instead of , or it cost more mana.

There is also a card that is effectively a 4 direct (cheaty) damage for , at a time Rakdos and the also overpowered Bonfire of the Dammed is in Standard.

I consider it quite reasonable given this that I should get Thragtusk.

I wonder, then, how this extends to YmtC. How do we decide when a card is 'too good', for contests and such? I've judged a few things here and there, and I always seem to have a gut feeling on power level, but when you think about it, it's kind of hard to tell.

I always hate those grades.  These are design forum contests, not development forum contests.  Tell me if it works, if its flavorful, and if its new.

The only cards that should be bumped for "too good" are cards which will clearly never get printed.  ie:
Awesome land I always wanted:
: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
Whenever ~ is tapped for mana, gain 1 life.

If I wanted development, I'd post the card on the main forums or design a set.
