Can be a bit challenging g1 vs heavy aggro, but you can side for that. Really discovering the power of orzhov charm here. You are primarily using it to remove t1/2 threats so life loss is low for you. It can also save a messenger, which is exactly what we want going on. The whole goal is all in on messenger, hence the shifts and resto's. the rest is a semi-midrange control package with tempo advantage discard of mental agony . Sorin is a back up win con, as is obzedat. Not 100% sold on lingering souls. It may end up as an O-ring or underworld connections (a little too slow for this sort of build, but maybe?). Course picking for a few here and there ain't bad! May want another sorin too if he proves useful, but primarily I'm wanting to drop relevant discard t4 vs him. Resto is dropped as needed only to save messengers or you are in dire need of a blocker.
I'm so all in on messenger I ALMOST want an undying evil or 2 as back up to hit a resto with to re-blink a messenger...but that's too greedy.
Bat is cute but CMC is too high I think. Cute tho-wish there was a similar effect at a lower cost Discard is necessary to disrupt other decks and is far more useful than it gets credit for currently in standard. Duress stops what I need it to, control cards. Agony is like a bad blightning but it's all we have, and gruesome is so great for picking apart combo pieces. Why run 2 cards when I have it all in one? Charm is cheaper than murder, and it's really an early game killer, so you shouldn't be killing off tons of life. The retrieval mode is secondary, and works really well for combat tricks and removal avoidance.
That's my line of thought. I'm open for discussion tho
You are really relying on drawing a messenger, which if they Oblivion ring it you have dead cards like Cloudshift in your hand. You could run Blind Hunter , although it costs the same as the other bat it gives you a little more bang. Otherwise I would cut cloudshift.
Yeah that would be a not good scenario. Which is a big reason why I chose duress to get pesky pillars, counters, and rings before he hits. That doesn't help top deck, but it ain't perfect. Nothing ever is. I may end up running more sorin and a heavier control package g2/3 if I run into geralf hate.
This looks like a neat idea, have to try it to see how it works out. Concerning your sideboard choices: I'd run Purify the Grave over Cremate , yeah cantrip is always nice but you side it in vs decks that abuse graveyards, so the flashback is like cantriping in a useful card. Depending on what graveyard abuse you encounter Tormod's Crypt might even be better (if you often get an emblem of Sorin you might even consider Beckon Apparition ).
Even if the in its casting cost isn't the best for the deck I'd probably run Divine Reckoning to save my messengers ... but only if not to many Boros Charm s run around, in this case Mutilate is probably your best choice indeed.
Oblivion Ring ... can't go wrong with it ... handles just about anything that slipped through your discard.
Vs messenger hate try either Faith's Shield or (if he hasn't undied) Altar's Reap (fizzle removal spell/effect and draw 2? yes please! maybe even mainboard material)
If you face a lot of the new "can't be countered" cards from RTR/GTC Nevermore might be of help.
Edit: Nearly forgot: Blind Obedience really slows those hasters down and extort seems great with your cheap spells and slowish gamegoal.
Wow awesome ideas and responses! I'm pretty stuck right now as where to go. The cuts id make are all in wrong CMC slots or are killing other sections of the deck causing massive redirection over all. So any clues on real numbers on where you personally would slide in stuff?
