I've noticed on some creature cards it will say "give so and so creatures +x/x" and some will say "give so and so creature X +1/1 counters" are they both they same? I am just curious for say the sakes of a card like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed.

No. Counters are placed on an object and last until that object leaves that zone. Other buffs last as long as their source says (usually until end of turn or as long as the source is on the battlefield )
Rules Advisor Please autocard: [c ]Disenchant[/c ] = Disenchant .

Something like Giant Growth pumps a creature temporarily without putting a counter on it. Burst of Strength puts a counter on the creature, so that bonus lasts until the creature dies or the counter is removed. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed gives your other non-humans +1/+1 as long as he is on the battlefield. He doesn't put counters on them, they are just all pumped. When he leaves the battlefield, this effect ends. He also gives them Undying, so if one of them dies, it will return with a +1/+1 counter (which stays on no matter what) and also recieve the additional +1/+1 from his other ability as long as he is also on the battlefield.
