If your opponent is untargetable for some reason (say Witchbane Orb ) and you play Lord of Tresserhorn does that mean that since there are no legal targets for the ability, it won't go on the stack, and you won't have to sac 2 creatures or lose 2 life?

If you can't pick a target for the ability, you'll remove the ability from the stack. It has no effect (no sacrifice, no life loss, no card draw)
