This thread rocks.

Also I love this card, but I'm going to adjust it a bit.

Life Buffer
Instant
Prevent the next 1 life you would lose.
If you lost life this turn, return ~ from your graveyard to your hand. (You did not lose life if it was prevented.)

They would probably create a new entry in the comprehensive rules for it, saying that whenever you lose life, you choose which life is lost.

Yeah, we try not to do that here. I mean, we add keywords, but that's how far we go mucking with the comp rules.

Also, life is a mass noun. Notice cards like Bloodchief Ascension . I see three uses of "life" on that card, all of them as a mass noun.

Clever deduction Watson! Maybe you can explain why Supergirl is trying to kill me.

With my approach, in the thread that inspired this one, any entity can gain a special property that makes it kinda separate and so it needs to be tracked even if it is normally not, for example life, in respects similar to this.

I love how in MTG even complicated mechanisms are only actually complicated if they are in the decks and in some cases sideboards being played, otherwise they can be ignored altogether.

The point is that you have to commit a part of your life total and you don't get "change" back. Hence I wanted to do it in higher quatity.

If it's just life counters .... it defeats the whole purpose.

The Number FOUR is written on the card. There's no need to add counters, which inheritly implies MODULAR, to the card. This chunk of life you paid will never be returned in parts, which is the commitment (a.k.a the cost) you have to make.

Wow, I would have never thought to do a gatherer search on a concept like that.  I'm embarrased mostly that it came from Mirage since I actually played back then lol.  Oh well, I will search harder before posts.

So let me take another crack at your design then...I'm confused.
You're saying that whenever something does ANY damage to you, instead you lose 4 life?  And in return no creatures with power 1 or less can damage you?

basically in short:

If you lose less than 4 life at a time, you can choose to have the damage/lifeloss chip away your real life total.

If you lose exactly 4 life, you can lose your life card instead. Anything more you will lose "real life" in additional.

As written it would definitely need comp rules addition then.  Part of the confusion could be fixed by not calling this ne object "Life"
