Always wanted to make a beast deck because of Ravanous Baloth.

This is just a first rough draft. What should I change?

4 x garruk's companion
4 x leatherback baloth
4 x ravenous baloth
4 x krosan warchief
4 x Durkwood Baloth
4 x rampaging baloth
4 x Garruk's Horde
4 x birds of paradise
4 x llanowar elves

24 x forest

Birds are there for an excuse to use them.

you could run the birds or some more elves , it really doesn't matter. birds can block flying, arbor elves could attack. as for the deck, it looks interesting. i was going to suggest adding cheaper creatures...but i forgot garruk's companion was in there :P

looks pretty solid to me, but then again i dont know of too many cards, therefore i cant make a ton of suggestions :P

I was contemplating adding rancor possibly Obstinate Baloth , and Fangren Firstborn .

Every beast deck i have seen has either Wirewood Savage or Garruk's Packleader in there for some draw.  You need a way to take advantage of Rampaging Baloths .   run spells like Rampant Growth , nature's lore , cultivate , or skyshroud claim .  I would also consider playing something like Descendants' Path .  Cheap way to get your creatures into play.  If your truly worried about fliers run a single copy of Spidersilk Armor .   For a finisher run Overrun or Overwhelming Stampede .

As the deck is right now what about Primal Surge ? It costs alot but when you pull it off it can be really fun!

I personally like Brushstrider , it allows you to swing for 3 and still have a blocker next round or atleast trade with a decent creature.

If you are worried about flying creatures and want instants Tower Defense is a neat one since it helps pump up even ground blockers +5 defense each for just 2 mana!

How about a singleton copy of any Version of green Garruks? It's on flavour and they're all very powerful and synergystic with your deck. ( Garruk Wildspeaker or Garruk, Primal Hunter .)

A mono-green beast deck is not going to win any tournaments anyway, so maybe just mix it up little. It doesn't really need to be all playsets. It will get boring fast, if every card is a 4x.

I second Wirewood Savage . Card advantage is important.

You may want to run more answer cards so you don't immediatley lose to random powerful stuff like Form of the Dragon ,   Teferi's Moat , planeswalker or troublesome lands.

Mold Shambler helps you do that without forcing you to lower your beast count. Depending on your metagame, or if you play more multiplayer Molder Slug can be very worthwhile, letting you deal with artifacts repeatedly.

Some of the new Bloodrush creatures from Gatecrash could be worthwhile. E.g. Slaughterhorn , as it can protect one of your creatures from burn, or generally make your opponent think twice about blocking when he already has seen you play it in another game. And since it's a beast, too,  in case you don't a pump spell, it's another dude that lets you draw a card or gain life with your beast enablers.

Versatility is key in my opinion.

By now, I probably don't have to explain to you why I think that you should really be running a couple of Krosan Tusker s. They are great at every stage of the game.

Also, Thragtusk , which you probably thought of but I'm mentioning it in case you forgot and have the pocketmoney...


To make space, take out some of the dudes, that actually don't do anything interesting besides being dudes and reduce the numbers on some of the really expensive ones (cmc 6+). So no Durkwood Baloths and -1 or -2 Garruk's Horde. Rampging Baloth, as has been mentioned, doesn't really do enough in your deck right now.


Maybe lower your entire curve significantly so you can skip (some of) the manaelves/birds?


Also, 24 Forests is boring. 

1x Mosswort Bridge
1x Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
?x Cavern of Souls

A small red splash? Birds of Paradise and 4xFire-Lit Thicket, which can provide untapped painless  on turn two would allow you to play red things without hurting your monogreen base in the slightest. You could consider 1 or 2 Contested Cliffs or Kessig Wolf Run also ghor-clan rampager becomes available.

Basically this would let you play more "spells" (in the form of lands), without hurting your creature count. It adds consistensy and variety.

I think it's a much more consistent list. It lacks a little late-game oomph though. Someone suggested Overrun . I still like Garruk.

I'm not sure, if you're going to be the one with the least ammount of creatures, when looking at Pulse of the Tangle and Keeper of the Beasts. I think you should cut those and look elsewhere. Especially with your little guys running around. Again Garruk gives also provides bea(s)ts but with less requirements for actually doing so.


Pit Fight is nice. But since your dudes are now not as big anymore you'll often spend two cards to deal with one. Unless you're running Krosan Warchief. Contested Cliffs is nice because it does, what pitfight does, but repeatedly and it's still a land so it doesn't take up a spell-slot.

I still strongly advice on running Mold Shambler because it can deal with so many problems while still being a beast.

Ravenous Baloth is tricky. He's strong alright but the ability is redundant in multiples. So maybe just make it three. Basically make everything in the deck but Companion and Leatherback (because they're awesome) a 3x just to free up your deck and be able to play more stuff.

So new List, including some new suggestions

30 creatures (23 beasts)

4x birds of paradise
4x garruk's companion
4x leatherback baloth
3x krosan warchief
3x wirewood savage
3x slaughterhorn
3x mold shambler
2x ravenous baloth
2x fangren firstborn
1x Garruks Horde
1x Terra Stomper (just because)


7 Non-creature Spells

2x Sword of Fire and Ice (Or any other good/broken equipment. Umezawa's Jitte , Sword of Light and Shadow , Loxodon Warhammer , Batterskull - Something beefy that gives you some huge bonues and isn't ultimately inferior to Rancor. This slot is about turning any creature into something fearful & valuable, when you're in topdeck mode.)
2x Clan Defiance (Provides "reach", kills flyers, kills creatures or all of the above. Not an early game card so the red is very doable.)
3x garruk wildspeaker (overrun ability gives you late game power, he makes beasts, +2 mana for clan defiance and mold shambler, he basically does everything)

23 Lands

10x Forest
4x Fire-lit Thicket
2x Contested Cliffs
1x Kessig Wolf Run
2x Cavern of Souls
2x Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
2x Mosswort Bridge

Three of the lands produce colorless, which can possibly hinder a turn 3 Leatherback Baloth . Not sure what to do about that.
