if a penumbra spider  dies can i regenerate it and still get the token spider?

No, because it didn't really die if you regenerate it.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in an thread with GM_Champion" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against AzureShade when card design is on the line!

When you regenerate a creature, you prevent it from being destroyed in the first place. The spider doesn't die, and thus it's ability does not trigger.
