Did anyone here hang out in the mature D&D area before that was shut down? It was a lot of fun. I'd fully support somewhere to talk about NSFW Magic stuff.
Also, I read, but don't comment on a lot of fanfiction. I find it hard not to come off completely critical.

I'm sure that most writers like overly critical feedback than no feedback at all.

+1

I'm a decent writer, but every time I submit something for review at my school's creative wrting club, it just comes back with "Excellent" and "good work". I appreciate that they appreciate it, but it doesn't help me grow as a writer at all. :/

The worst is when I actively tried to get negative feedback/hatemail by writing some rather a depraved Harry Potter fic. I didn't just got compliments, people started offering ideas. Which, all things considered, was minorly terrifying.

Yeah, I prefer strong constructive criticism even if it's rather severe. Sometimes you just need to be told to change things. I'm a bit behind schedule with the one Ravnica story I'm working on, for example, because Isaic pointed out to me that I was changing POV too much. I have to rewrite that scene, now, so it's a pain, but if he hadn't given me that feedback the piece wouldn't be as strong.

Eyehunter, what was the mature section like? Why was it closed down?

We've talked about making a "Expanded Omniverse" subsection so we can include things that contradict canon or have a high chance of doing so in the future.

The major reason that was kicked around is because of Tezzeret punches out the Multiverse.
And I'm still opposed to it, even though some of my planar chaos stuff would fit there.

Well, it was started to discuss the Book of Vile Deeds and its good twin (WotC published). Those books covered extensive discussion of what is good and evil, plus nudity and extra detail on subjects like torture. There were some threads like that, most notably "Paladin kills baby to save world: does he fall for killing an innocent?" (Which is a foolish question. The paladin should not be used in a campaign where this situation can occur). Then there were the perverted uses of magic items/spells, rules for sex/STD's, minotaur genitalia questions, and sharing of NSFW images threads. There was an RP thread named "Pippa's slave market." There was a lot of terrible stuff on it, but plenty of D&D games do run into mature moments and it was good to have a place to discuss them. The main books mention slavery occurs, but don't go into any detail on the Alignment impacts or any hints at how to use it. And there's a few EXTREMELY mature but common backstory tropes that I don't think I even mention out here.

Not to mention mature historical, non-fantasy details, like gender roles.

Over the few months I watched it, it went from no moderation to harsh moderation (nearly every thread was shut down) to a reasonable level. Then it was fully locked, shortly before gleemax took over. The NSFW parts were the most well-known and gave the area a bad rep; they clearly needed to go. It's a shame the important, truly mature threads were lost.

On criticism: A lot of it is that I don't know anyone very well, and the format leads itself to me listing out every single detail. In person, I know when to stop. I'll consider speaking up more.

In your experience, and I know some of this is going to be colored by your attitude to the material, but in your experience did the presence of specifically sexually explicit content foster an environment of... well, awfulness for lack of a better term? Or was it more the lack of (self-)moderation?
