Hi all,

I'm trying to understand if I can use Cavern of Souls with Phyrexian Metamorph for my knight deck.

So, the situation is that I have Cavern of Souls and declare the creature type "knight'. Then, I cast Phyrexian Metamorph and it enters the battlefield as a copy of a knight (e.g. Knight Exemplar ). Phyrexian Metamorph enters the battlefield as a knight, but the card I cast is a shapeshifter and not a knight until it's in the process of entering the battlefield (e.g. in the process of resolving). Or, perhaps "casting" a card means that it is simultaneously entering the battlefield... I'm not sure.

Please let me know as the official ruling on this determines whether or not I'll be using Cavern of Souls for my knight deck. And, of course, I appreciate everyone's responses :D.

Metamorph is not a Knight spell so you can only use the first mana ability on Cavern to cast it

No, that doesn't work.

Like you said you are casting a shapeshifter, you can not use the mana from the cavern for a shapeshifter.  (the fact that it will be a knight later doesn't matter while you are casting it)

Metamorph won't be a knight until it actually enters the battlefield and only if you chhose to copy a knight at that time. However, you pay for a spell when you put it on the stack, where Metamorph is just a shapeshifter. You can't use mana from the Cavern's second mana ability on it.

No, thats not right. Thats like saying "throwing" a ball means that it is simultaneously landing on the floor.

First you cast the spell, then your opponent gets a chance to respond, and only if it isnt countered does it resolve (and enter the battlefield in the case of a permanent spell).

That makes no sense to me.

If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed?

Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch . YAY COLOR IDENTITY

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.

OK, thanks everyone - that all makes sense. Prior to resolution, the card must be the declared creature type for it to use Cavern of Soul 's second ability.
