if i control a creature with extort and i play a spell and my opponent casts an instant to kill my extort creature, i respond and play the extort ability; but if i cast my spell and then extort and then he casts his instant to kill my creature in response, does my creature die before the extort or does the extort resolve no matter what? thanks, Ken

Extort is a triggered ability. You don't "play" it, and you certainly don't "respond" with it. Extort goes on the stack automatically and immediately after you cast a spell. It will resolve no matter what happens to its source.
