If I have 5 Rack Pats on the field and attack against 5 creatures my opponent controls, how does the combat system work when 2 defending creatures are powerful enough to kill 2 Rack Pats? I was playing with my brother and he controlled the 5 defending creatures against my 5 Rack Pats and blocked all 5 of my Pack Rats. Then he first had the two creatures that were strong enough to kill 2 of the 5 Rack Pats block them out completely, thus lowering my other 3 down to 3/3 and then block them out from there. Can the attacking player do that? Do they attack as 5/5s together regardless of which ones die in the combat phase?

I am very confuzzled. Thanks to any answers!

P.S. I like calling them,"Rack Pats" so no, they're not typos.

all Pack Rat s are 5/5
assuming no defender has First Strike (you didn't mention it) they will deal 5 damage to each defender

since 2 of the defenders can kill 2 of your rats they will then be reduced to 3/3
that could mean that more rats die, if some have 3 damage marked on them. that again can mean that even more rats die

I'd need actual creatures to give a better answer, I hope it is clear regardless

All blockers are declared simultaneously. Without first or double strike involved, all your Pack Rat s will deal 5 combat damage to their blockers or the player/planeswalker they attacked. While at the same time all blockers deal their combat damage to the attackers. Afterwards SBAs will see two Pack Rats with lethal damage marked and destroy them, which lowers the power/toughness of the remaining Rats. Another check of SBAs will then destroy all Pack Rats, that have at least 3 damage marked on them and destroys them. Yet another check is done afterwards, killing all Rats that now are lethally damaged, and so on, until no SBAs are performed.

Just for some further detail.

Pretened your opponent controlled (and blocked with)

2 Grizzly Bear
1 Hill Giant
1 Armada Wurm + it's token

All damage is assigned/dealt at the same time.  All of your opponents creatures will be dealt 5 damage from your rats, and be destoryed.

2 of your rats will also be destroyed by the blocking wurms.
Then before anybody gets prioirty your rat that was blocked by the hill giant is a 3/3 with 3 damage on it, so it is destroyed, and now your last two rats are 2/2 with 2 damage marked on them and they are also destroyed.

All creatures gone.

eg. you have five 5/5 Rack Pats attacking

four are blocked by a 6/6, 4/4, 3/3 and 1/1

all will deal and receive damage based on their power at that moment (all five Rack Pats deal 5 damage and one receives 6, one 4, one 3, one 1 and one none).

immediately afterwards SBA's check and see one Rack Pat lethally damaged (6 damage 5 toughness) and three of the blocking creatures are lethally damaged so those four creatures are destroyed, this suddenly makes your Rack Pats 4/4 and now another is lethally damaged (4 damage 4 toughness) so it's destroyed and now your Rack Pats are 3/3 and another is lethally damaged (3 damage 3 toughness) so it's destroyed. Finally, you have two 2/2 Rack Pats (one undamaged and the other with 1 damage) and your opponent has a 6/6 with 5 damage on it.

Wow, this clears up my question perfectly. Thank you to all you helpful people strolling teh forums.  For what it may be worth, K-mogg and goth's posts helped the most, because of the examples they provided (to make up for my lack of one).  You guys rule! (pun intended)
