Good afternoon, new to the board and looking to get a few questions answered. I played this game 15 years ago and still have numerous cards. Last week they opened a new comic book store around the corner and right away people were playing magic. I decided i am ready to start up again so i started doing some research. I found the game has evolved with new decks, multiple new decks at that. My question is, if i showed up to play next week with my magic cards from 15 years ago would my cards even be relevant? Do people still play with these cards? Could i make a deck consisting of my old cards with a few of the new cards?
I understand my questions can be confusing, any help is appreciated. I am just trying to figure out if all of my old cards are completely useless this day and age in regards to magic, thanks.

it depends if the shop offers Legacy or Vintage tournaments, you can use your old cards if they offer only Standard and maybe Modern you can only use the cards that have been reprinted in those formats if you just want to play some friendly games your old cards are probably fine, just ask the other people which format they are playing or if they mind if you use your old cards also, be sure to check the prices of your old cards before you trade, some carry 3 and 4 digit prices these days

So what would be the most played format nowadays if i may ask?
Standard, followed by Modern these are the formats offered for Friday Night Magic (FNM), Standard has to be offered in every "official" shop, other formats are an option, Modern is usually the most popular other option
Legacy/Vintage is slowly dying, because Wizards can't reprint some of the staples, so the price of entry is very high
casual formats like Commander (formerly Elder Dragon Highlander, EDH) are also quite popular, but that is hard to quantify because there are no tournaments, so there is not really much official data
if you want some ideas for decks, check out the decks of the week these are all the decks that did well on MTGO tournaments you can also see by how many tournaments "fired" how popular a format is
while that is for online and Vintage isn't fully availabe there (there is Classic that kinda sorta mimics it, but it still lacks some cards, most notably Power9) you can still draw some parallels to "paper magic"

again, it depends what you want. I'll list a few options
the best way to get a big collection is to buy playsets (4 copies) of commons+uncommons those run you about $20-50 per set, depending on the shop and set then just add (mythic) rares as needed
if you want a "headstart" into Standard go for one of the Event Decks (currently only the ones from RTR are fully Standard legal, GTC Event Decks will come out in a few weeks), they are competitive enough to not get totally destroyed at FNM
if you know which deck to build and don't need a large collection simply order those cards as singles from one of the big online chains or ebay
if you enjoy the lottery aspect of boosters or want to play sealed/draft with friends go for booster boxes if you need basic lands as well go for a Fat Pack

Start here: www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx... I would also suggest the Basic Rulebook and the Planeswalker rules: www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx...
Also, its worth noting that beside the name at the top, you ignore everything that is physically written on your older cards (and some more recent ones too) and instead you play with them using their Oracle text. This is there up to date card wording, and can be found at gatherer.wizards.com Hope that helps

Not bad. But what happens flavor wise when one kamahl kills the other one?
Zis iz a sign uf deep psychological troma, buried in zer subconscious mind. By keelink himzelf, Kamahl iz physically expressink hiz feelinks uf self-disgust ova hiz desire for hiz muzzer. [/GermanPsychologistVoice]
That makes no sense to me.
If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed?

Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch . YAY COLOR IDENTITY
Is algebra really that difficult?
Survey says yes.
You want to make a milky drink. You squeeze a cow.
I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.
