Are you allowed to play Instants during the combat and defending phases?  Even after the defending player has selected what will block what?  I'm going to my first pre-release this weekend, and need to know this so that I don't get called for cheating, or showing a card and then my opponents know what I have in my hand then.

You can cast an instant whenever you have priority.  In order for a given phase or step to end, all players must pass priority while the stack is empty.

This means that you'll have an opportunity to cast an instant during the beginning of combat, declare attackers step (after attackers are declared), or declare blockers step (after blockers are declared).

You could also cast an instant during the combat damage step, but not until after combat damage has been assigned and dealt, so a pump like Giant Growth won't do you much good if cast after combat damage has happened.

Yes, you have many opportunities to cast instants and activate abilities during combat.

By the book, combat goes like this:

- Beginning of combat (each player gets a chance to cast instants and activate abilities)

- Declare Attackers (the first thing that happens here is attackers are declared, then each player gets a chance to cast instants and activate abilities)

- Declare Blockers (the first thing that happens here is blockers are declared, then each player gets a chance to cast instants and activate abilities)

- Combat Damage (the first thing that happens here is combat damage is assigned, then it's dealt simultaneously, then each player gets a chance to cast instants and activate abilities)

- End of Combat (each player gets a chance to cast instants and activate abilities)

Congratulations on deciding to go to your first tournament; I hope you have a good time. You might wish to review the basic rulebook, which is the first link on this page. This might answer other questions you didn't even realize you had. There are a lot of aspects of the rules, like the one you asked about here, that many tournament players will consider very basic, yet it is possible to play casually for a pretty long time without needing to know. (Besides this question, which was basically about the steps of combat, another good example is the ins and outs of the planeswalker redirection rule. The Basic Rulebook nicely outlines both.)

Thank you, I hope I do too :D

I want to make sure I'm reading the rules correctly, so I'm going to be playing Boros at the pre-release, and might splash some green so I can take advantage of Gruul's bloodrush.

Here's another situation I think I might be in: I have a Boros Elite on the field and am attacking with it.  My opponent decides not to block it, so before the actual damage is activated, can I use Skinbrand Goblin to Bloodrush and hit for  3 instead of the 1 that I was initially going to swing for? I am planning on using these 2 guilds together so that my opponent underestimates my little guys and then I get some good big hits in early.

Can I do things like I mentioned above? From what I'm reading, it sounds like I can, however I want to make sure.  Is this legal?

Yes. To do this, you'll activate your bloodrush ability in the Declare Blockers step (ie, after your opponent has declared that he's not blocking).
