So I cast Lightning Bolt , retain priority, and copy it with Izzet guildmage . If after I pass priority someone counters the original Bolt does this have any affect on the copy? I don't think so, but it came up and we were not 100%

yes, the activated ability of the Guildmage will be countered because it targets the original Lightning Bolt
if you had the mana you could respond to their counterspell and copy it again by activating Guildmage again

That makes sense. The copy does not exist until the ability resolves, and it no longer has a target.

note: for the triggered ability created by Chandra, the Firebrand 's second ability which doesn't target, it would create a copy of Lightning Bolt from last known info (LKI) if someone countered the Bolt in response
