Church of Collateral
Land
: Add one mana of any colour to your mana pool, then put a debt counter on Church of Collateral.
, Remove X debt counters from Church of Collateral: Search your library for a card with converted mana cost X, reveal it and put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. Only any opponent may activate this ability. X can't be zero.

Balanced? Interesting?

Interesting, but should probably be tweaked so that it's not as easy to just get lands.
Come check out my friend's youtube channel where he gives bad movies what's coming to them!

Well, it says X, not X or less, so as long as you activate it the first turn you play it, then don't get to search for any lands.

I don't see why they couldn't.  They can just choose to remove 0 counters, no matter how many counters are added to it.

Oh. I read the card as, ": Search your library for a card with converted mana cost X, where X is the number of debt counters on Church of Collateral, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library. Only any opponent may activate this ability."

Anyway, now that I'm actually reading the card, I'd say just add "nonland" or "X can't be 0."

I'm a bit worried about cards that let multiple players activate them, but can result in people fighting over resources.  The rules handle it with priority, but it might not be intuitive to everyone.  If player C shouts out that they want to activate it and remove all its counters but it's still player B's turn, things get messy.

Would it still fit your creative vision if it had a sorcery-speed-only limitation, so a player can only use it on his or her own turn?

Seems to desperately need a once per turn clause, especially with zero counters.

Interesting.

I thought I had written "X can't be zero". It was my intention to write it, at least.
