Perhaps the best evidence for why WotC has chosen NOT to use gendered pronouns on legendary creatures is presented as this very thread.
What they've been doing works fine, and there's no desire for worldwide player arguments. :P
No one was really arguing about the pronouns for legendaries, as far as I could tell. It seemed to me like everyone supported the idea.
What people were arguing about was using "his or her" when referring to players, which quickly degenerated into the age-old argument about singular they. Which has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Cardboard rectangles don't have gender.
Nor do they have any combat prowess to speak of, nor do they produce mana, nor do they do any of the things a Magic card flavorfully represents. If you demand that every aspect of flavor be adequately represented by the physical medium by which the game is played, we're either going to have a very boring game or very interesting (and deadly) booster packs.
The fact that the physical card doesn't have a gender is irrelevant. The creature that is flavorfully represented on the card (usually) does. Referring to them as such is no more ridiculous than naming them already is.
