Flavour text sucks you guys

When you deliberately change the text to make it sound stupid, sure... what you made it into would definitely suck.
Furthermore, nobody was necessarily saying that it was a groundbreaking piece of flavor text or anything. Just that we liked it. 
I think it fits the card just fine, in both Orzhov flavor and in terms of what you are actually "doing" by weilding it, even if it's a relatively simple, straightforward quip.

Now that I read the flavor text again, why wasn't Soul Ransom  an Orzhov card? It fits much better with the flavor. "Oh, this creature? I suppose I could give it back. All it'll cost you is a few cards..."

Except this will kill the Rakdos Keyrune while netting you a point of life. So yeah... not really terrible, is it?
Whether or not this kills Rakdos Keyrune is completely irrelevant. Rakdos Keyrune swings in for 3 and is generally a much better blocker than this, bar some corner cases. Rakdos Keyrune is a more powerful card in constructed, period.
The synergy with extort is great, though. This will be a relevant card in limited.

That's not synergy. That's just nonconflict. Having a bear in play has as much synergy with Extort.
It's really not even about giving niche cards to black.
It should be about giving black cards to Niche.
