This is purely a rhetorical question since I only play Standard, but I don't understand the templating on Bloodbraid Elf  . It says to exile cards to the bottom of your library (unless I'm misunderstanding it). In my understanding, exiling and placing cards on the bottom of your library are totally separate. The ruling is " the remaining exiled cards are randomly placed on the bottom of your library."
Did the rules used to be different, and exiled cards were put on the bottom of your library instead of removed from the game?

No. There is no connection whatsoever between exiling things and your library, nor has there ever been one.
Cascade exiles the cards, lets you cast one of them, and then takes all of the cards that were exiled that you didn't cast out of exile and puts them on the bottom of your library.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

If exile is then just a roadstop on the way to the bottom of your library, what's the purpose of the exile step then?
Why not just say "play one card and put the rest on the bottom of your library"?

it would work with revealing as well
it's mostly so that the cards are "safe" during the resolution, same reason why Madness temporarily exiles for example

If it didn't exile them, they'd still technically be on top of your library, so the exile helps stop any weird things that could potentially happen while casting the spell.
For example, imagine that cascade didn't exile the cards, and say the spell you cascaded into had a Kicker cost  you want to pay. You crack a Chromatic Sphere  during the cast in order to help pay for it, which has you draw a card. You draw the top card of your library...which is still the first card that was revealed during the cascade and is now probably sitting face-up on the table underneath a bunch of other cards you also went through while cascading. Weird. Exiling the cards means that problem never arises.

That makes no sense to me.
If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed?

Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise  in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch  . YAY COLOR IDENTITY

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.
