I think it stops board sweepers by bring instant speed. Cast it at your opponent's upkeep, and they can't cast noncreature spells for their entire turn. All standard board sweepers are, I believe, noncreature spells.

To stop board sweepers/miracles and fatties I'd rather play Orim's Chant ... D: Yeah eternal formats only, I know. Fury is still better for dealing with mana/ability dorks and is able to end the game on its own though. Still quite expensive toy. Manahungry, colorhungry and moneyhungry.
