It's theoretically #2, but in practice, it goes black, blue, green.

R&D sets it based on how many such spells a color gets. And blue always has the most.

How is simic "shafted" in limited? Evolve is a very, very strong mechanic for limited, with removal at a premium.

The mechanic just seems like it's going to be a turn or two behind most of the time.  It's really going to be centered around curving out fairly well, and also the mechanic itself requires you to play creatures for as many turns as possible just so you have a chance at blocking some of the big stuff Gruul, Boros, and Orzhov will be throwing down turn 4+.  We have a lot left to see, i have no idea how it will play, and Maro said it was his favorite mechanic, but it just looks like a bad strategy for limited where Gruul and Boros are playing crazy aggro.

I hope there is a life draining spell somewhere in the or cards that have yet to be released, theres no point in having infininte mana through liliana of the dark realms or crypt ghast if there is nothing big to spend it on besides griselbrand ; not to mention and are going to need some serious removal/sweeper cards to compete with all the stuff boros and gruul are putting down.

I actually think Dimirs prerelease promo is the strongest. I mean obviously not the first 2-3 turns but you get so much value out of the one card.

It mills and with the mill spell 0.o OMG milling an opponent out in limited so easy... viable is all. Chances of both card together, well it's a little better then random considering you garanteed the promo but still there is the guild mage and I have a feeling there will be a cipher mill spell @ uncommon for reasonable cost.

something akin to drain life or exsanguinate right? I mean they do have increasing ambition and diabolic revelation for high mana searching. They do also have army of the damned if you wanted a high cost spell to win (next turn).

I do agree there should be a couple more sweepers. Going orzhov for the prerelease (favorite guild after golgari), but havent seen too much that is great outside obzedat and the parasite thrull thus far.

I was under the distinct impression all that mana from the Shade was to boost said shade to silly proportions...

Not saying you will want to build a 100% evolve deck but evolve will be a huge tempo advantage if it plays out right. Remember that 0/1 flyer dork I played on turn 1? Yeah, now he's a 3/4 on turn 5 (to be conservative) and I didn't have to spend any extra mana  or CA to make him that big.

And of course the deckbuilding phase will make or break simic decks... really need to pay attention to the curve and draft/play as many creatures as possible.

it looks like it will really shake up limited and there's a lot of good multiplayer cards.  i don't play limited or multiplayer.

You can just skip this one and wait for the next set.

i guess i'm being unfair; the constructed stuff for simic/gruul/boros is solid; i'm just not that interested in them.

While we've seen quite a few cards, I still can't get a strong impression of the set as a whole.

Dimir was looking ridiculously bomb-y until more Extort cards came out

Orzhov was looking gross and perfectly curved until Simic got some excellent evolvers and probably the second-best Guildmaster

Simic was looking like a house full of giant facebeaters and some pretty good card draw until Gruul started showing off some big Bloodrush pieces

Gruul was looking ridiculously strong until Aurelia's Fury and Boros Charm came out

Right now the only thing I know for sure is that we aren't seeing nearly enough flavor text on these cards, but what we are seeing (Gridlock, Bracers, High Priest) is damned good.
