Social engineering is a form of con. It's not that much different from cold reading, except that cold reading is when you volunteer information and I quickly make conclusions about you. Social engineering is when you're just too naïve.

A social engineer by my definition is someone with an sharp understanding of human psychology across the board. Gender, ethnicity, social status (the poor, middle class, the rich), motherland, religious standing, etc. Each of these elements has its own unique set of basic psychological principals. For example, women think a certain way, they perceive things a certain way, they react a certain way. Same goes for African Americans, and the same goes for Non-Americans. A social engineer is someone who understands the details behind the way each set of people think, and knows how to plug into their specific mind-state and communicate with them on an equal level. They can see through to the real you, they can read you like a book. A social engineer would also be someone who can help people break certain psychological barriers that have a negative consequence for with that psychological mind-state. Just a like a software engineer, a social engineer can program or reprogram someone's personality.

Not as far as I'm concerned, there is a serious difference between the two. A con-artist has no real skills and relies pretty much on nothing but lies to get over on people. They don't understand anything about how people think nor do have any adeptive communication skills. Their tactics would include lying, bribary, and extortion; none of which are the showings of any psychological mastery.

See, completely ignoring why saying women think a certain way or various ethnic groups think a certain way is offensive.
In a court of law you'd have to explain why it's offensive. In my defense, my statement wasn't relating to anything negative. Simply saying a set group of people think a certain way is a neutral statement. The essence of being offended is occurrence of a negative or harmfully untruthful statement. You're just trying to make it into something it wasn't by playing on a slight relativity to an actual Code of Conduct violation, but my statement is missing the prerequisite context to actually qualify as a violation. My statement was just an generic comment, it didn't relate to anything offensive.
