Was looking through an old ruling errors thread from prior to M13 and noticed that a ruling error has not been fixed for the Mirage block "instantments" cycles:

Armor of Thorns
Grave Servitude
Lightning Reflexes
Mystic Veil
Necromancy
Parapet
Relic Ward
Soar
Spider Climb
Ward of Lights

Each of these cards has the following ruling:

The sacrifice occur only if you cast it using its own ability. If you cast it using some other effect (for instance, if it gained flash from Vedalken Orrery), then it won't be sacrificed.

It should say "the sacrifice occurs".

Also, Boldwyr Intimidator 's second and third rulings are the same.

I found another one.

Firestorm Phoenix
"If Firestorm Phoenix would die, return Firestorm Phoenix to its owner's hand instead. Until that player's next turn, that player plays with that card revealed in his or her hand and can't play it."
Since Firestorm Phoenix isn't a land card, it should say "cast" instead of "play."

This will not change.  I noted this before in Oracle and Gatherer Ruling Changes - Dark Ascension.

The current Oracle rules text states "can't play it."  Perhaps this could be changed to "can't cast it."  A corner case which comes to mind that this would affect is a Dryad Arbor was somehow copy of Firestorm Phoenix .

Congrats, you have discovered why Firestorm Phoenix    says "play." Not many people know this or can figure this out. Of course, that's also why that part won't change...

Thanks to everyone for their ideas. I'll be closing this thread soon (and opening the next one), go get your ideas in. Okay, soon-ish... kind of...

Ah, of course. Weird corner cases for the win.

Martyrdom refers to "this ability" but "this ability" is the ability of Martyrdom, not the ability it grants to the creature. It should say "that ability."

That usage of "this" is perfectly cromulent English (definition 2).

Magic has its own syntax to avoid some of the epic badness of the English language. Martyrdom isn't a huge problem (since nobody uses it), but less ambiguity, and more completeness, is always better for Magic IMO.

The second ruling for Nix is missing spaces in front of two of the cardnames.

(such asAllosaurus Rider)

(such asFrogmite)

Magic cards are still written in English. I'd be happy to have them all translated to s-expressions, but that's not happening, and so English-language ambiguities are always going to be present. I understand the desire to remove them, but there's really no point when the card is not realistically ever going to be interpreted wrong. Yes, there are two possible abilities that "this ability" could refer to, but only one of them is an activated ability, and beyond that I doubt most players even realize that spell abilities are a thing.
