I remembered lately, that in his preview of Deck pack 2 (www.toptiertactics.com/16795/duels-of-th...) WINGSPANTT said about card "Berserk: "this card goes way back, early Magic". So I have the question for veterans - are there differences between old and new cards? I'm not talking about the rules of the game. I'm talking... Not sure - style, perhaps. Abilities and such. Anything that can be called - "good old times" with some tears in it)

For one thing, old school card mechanics were a little simpler.  I also think that although some of the old school cards were very powerful (in fact the most powerful cards are old), in general the new cards are on average much more powerful.

Banding was a pretty useful tool in (mostly) White's skill-set that got retired because it was "too confusing".

It really wasn't all that confusing.

Older cards were either terrible or extremely powerful.
Newer cards tend to be more even in power.

Another difference:
Creatures are generally much stronger in newer sets. ( Baneslayer Angel , Bloodbraid Elf , Vampire Nighthawk ,...)
Sorceries/instants are generally more powerful in old magic sets. ( Berserk , Mana Drain , Swords to Plowshares ,...)
Of course there are many exceptions, but broadly speaking this is true.

Also, older cards tended to have some nice "Yeah, its undercosted, but it's gonna cost you another way" cards, like Force of Nature for example.

There was no color pie. Black was close to being the most powerful color in the game in 1996, it had every ability in the game. I preferred the card borders and art from that time, it was old looking, eerily arcane and what. Control and Combo decks were very dominant then. Aggro existed, but it usually had Red in it to be competitive.

Playtesting by the developers wasn't as systematic or fleshed-out back then, leading to awful cards and overpowered cards in the alpha/beta sets.

Early matches were slow, with Icy Manipulator s locking everything down, and tons of creature control abounding.

White weenie was my favorite early archetype.  Remember the "pile of bitches" deck that featured female images in the card artwork?

The good ol' days Smile

The notion of interrupt-speed and extremely inconsistent wording e.g. "target player" vs. "choose a player" vs. "pick a player" were common.

Flanking was pretty useful, too.

Jolrael's Centaur was popular and the 97 world championship (I think) was won with a black weenie deck that featured Fallen Askari .
