Can someone help explain Mimic Vat  works? I thought with imprint it was when it entered the battlefield?

Imprint doesn't mean anything. Just pretend that word isn't there. Otherwise, the card does exactly as it says.

words in italic on a card do nothing
it's just there for flavor reasons (generally flavor text, often "keywords" to thematically link certain abilities like Imprint or Morbid)

when a non-token creature dies, you can exile the card. When you activate the ability it puts a token copy of that card on the field. You can swap the exiled card for another card when another nontoken creature dies.

Even back in the original Mirrodin block, we had Panoptic Mirror  and Death-Mask Duplicant  with "imprint" abilities that weren't "when CARDNAME enters the battlefield".
